Costume Jewelry Reference

Jewelry
Design Art

Some jewelry designers first developed their ideas on
paper, thereby using material that was meant to be temporary. Because of that, we
are fortunate to have any of these miniature art works remaining. They
demonstrate the development of a piece of jewelry from an original idea to the finished product, and lend
insight into the creative process.

The art work and designs
on paper shown below are from the DeRosa, Haskell, Barclay and other companies. Some show
actual jewelry made from each design, and others show jewelry that
is similar or in the same style or era.

BARCLAY brooch
of green
enameled leaves, red enameled ladybug and clear rhinestone pave pods, 3-5/8"
by 3", Barclay by Rice-Weiner Alvin and Robert Rice, Louis Mark, circa
1950, Rhode Island. This brooch comes with the BARCLAY
original design art work for this brooch. It is interesting to see that the
original idea was for the pods to be green enamel, but in the finished
brooch leaves are green instead. The process of jewelry design is

View I wonder if this could be for the DeRosa fur clip shown at the
right here?

DEROSA large lily bouquet fur clip with creamy lavender and purple
enameling and purple and clear rhinestones in a gold plated setting. It is
one of their larger clips at 4" by 2-1/4", and it is "as is" with some very
small chips in the enamel on two petals. It is signed "R DeRosa" on the back
and it was made in the 1940s, still very lovely today.

I always enjoy finding
original vintage design art work for the costume jewelry we love. The two
mermaid pages here came to me recently, but the seller did not know what
jewelry company had used them, if any. They are all originals painted
by hand on a crisp tissue paper.

Some are very
similar to DeRosa pieces, and I wish I knew for sure.

I had hoped these were from the DeRosa
Company, but I am not at all sure. They are not
drawn like the ones in the collection of DeRosa design art work I already have, seen

HERE, and I don’t recognize that any of these designs were made into
jewelry. They could have been done to submit to DeRosa by an outside
designer, but so far. I do not know.

I continually do research about DeRosa jewelry and
appreciate any new information.

Jewelry
Advertising Art

Some jewelry makers also used artists’ renderings of finished
jewelry as advertisements in stores and publications. The Miriam Haskell
original watercolors shown here were hung in shops and distributed to buyers
at department stores. Most of these are thought to have been painted by
Larry Austin, an illustrator about whom little is known other than this
wonderful work.

HASKELL
Hess dress clips with glass pearls, aqua and cranberry transparent glass beads
set in antiqued silver tone flowers with clear rhinestone accents, set of two
pieces circa 1940, 2-1/2" each. More pieces of this set and the art work that
illustrates it can be seen in Cera’s book "Jewels of Miriam Haskell" on page
90-91. These can also be seen in "Miriam Haskell Jewelry" by Gordon & Pamfiloff,

JEWELRY
DESIGN

In November 2004, Brenda, a long-time jewelry dealer and collector, wrote:
My husband and I are just back from at trip to New York City. We had the
opportunity to see two fabulous jewelry shows in progress at the
American Folk Art Museum. Both are of fine jewelry.

The first show we saw was "Seaman Schepps – A Century of New York
Jewelry Design." Much of this jewelry was designed from the early
1930s to the late 1950s. He catered to a celebrity clientele from
Hollywood to royalty. The jewelry was often pictured in glamorous photos
in old Vogue magazines.
Over and over, I saw how fine jewelry was the direct inspiration for our
vintage costume jewelry, particularly in Trifari, Coro and even K.J.L.
I had to keep reminding myself that what I was looking at was REAL, as I
have almost line for line copies in vintage costume jewelry. I realized
that my beloved Lucite jelly bellies were copied from figurals
originally done in gold and rock crystal. One example is the
Trifari jelly belly bird brooch, shown at right.

The same
is true of pearl bellies, tuttie fruity (which we call fruit salad), and
invisibly set stones. Many of K.J.L.’s (Kenneth J Lane’s) designs look
very similar to Schepp’s jeweled menagerie. Even the stylized Hattie
Carnegie figurals done with orange and green lucite saw their
origination from the designs by Seaman Schepps

The second show (right across the street) was "Masterpieces of
American Jewelry". These fine jewels were by the best of the best –
Tiffany, Cartier, etc. Tiffany did a series of enamel and diamond
orchid brooches in the 1890s, and Coro mimicked them in the enamel and
rhinestone orchid pins done in the 1940s, like the one shown at left.

VICTORIAN 15 carat
yellow gold, blue enamel and pearl hinged bangle, circa 1860. There are
six-sided asymmetrical stars on each side, outlined in blue enameling. A
lovely hand engraved design outlines both sides of the front as well as both
sides of the center element, ending at the sides by the hinge and opening
with scrolls and flowers. Gold beads tip each side of the domed front. The
condition is perfect except for a VERY shallow 1/2" straight light
depression on the back. The clasp closes firmly and easily, the pearls are
all there and have a lovely sheen and the enamel is all in place. It is a
size slightly smaller than the standard contemporary size of 7" at 6-1/2"
with a 1-1/4" wide front and 1/2" wide back.. The finish is matte or
bloomed not shiny, absolutely gorgeous. View

feminine look for the early 1900’s.

Dainty lavalieres are seen in many photographs of
the early 1900’s.

A lovely small waist is ornamented with a striped
belt and fancy buckle or sash pin.

Sentimental hair locket may have contained the hair
of a sweetheart.

Starting just before the turn of the century, lighter weight jewelry became
popular, reflecting the advent of metals that were strong enough to support
this style of jewelry making as well as the tastes for lighter fabrics in
clothing. (Think of the white hand embroidered dresses worn by Edwardian
ladies like these>>>

This filigree style continued and developed through the flapper era and into
the 1930’s. Sometimes they are plain filigree,
and sometimes decorated with rhinestones and/or enameling.

Costume Jewelry Magazine

You may have some jewelry about
which you would like more information. There are generally two areas of
interest, the market value
and jewelry history. Whether you are researching or selling, I hope these
ideas may be of use to you.

~
SELLING to us ~

Since I receive lots of questions about selling to a dealer,
let me offer a few tips.

Even though I buy jewelry almost every day, I don’t buy everything
we are offered… no one could! I buy based on what is popular,
desirable and what we think will our customers will like. And we do pay well for what
we buy. Also, what we buy changes all the time as fashions and trends
change.

1. Be thorough. I am sure you would like the best possible
price, so take care to clearly state what it is you have for
sale. The name, size, color (since computer monitors can differ), and
condition are useful.

2. Do your homework. Most dealers not keen on guessing games and
"what will you offer" is only a thinly veiled request for a free appraisal.
Have some idea how much you would like for what you are selling. There are
many sources of information on the internet, so there’s little excuse these
days NOT to know how much you want. If you are
reluctant to do your own homework then the price you realize if you DO happen to
sell something will often be too low. Check the information below
for ideas on how to do research. It is fun and you can learn a lot!

I might add here that if you ask too little for a piece of jewelry, I will
let you know and I will pay more. I always want a seller to leave the
transaction happy and feeling fairly treated. My goal is to be the one you
come to the next time you find something wonderful. That is exactly how I
have gotten all of
these lovely things for the last 30 years.

3. Be reasonable. For most antiques businesses, expenses eat up
at least 30-40% of the retail price, on top of what was paid for the item. That means if we sell a $100.00 piece,
$30.00-45.00 of that will cover charge card fees, rent, supplies, web site costs,
insurance, payroll, etc. If a dealer pays 40-50% for the item itself, then
the amount left for profit is only about 20%. These are just example figures, but
hopefully it helps you get the
drift.

What a dealer will pay can vary widely. It will depend on
what they specialize in, how knowledgeable they are, what they are expert in
and sell best. It can also depend on how fair and honest a dealer is.
Sell to someone with an excellent reputation, and someone who specializes in
what you have for sale. There is no set formula of how much a dealer will
pay for items, but in general do not expect to get more than 1/3 to 1/2
of a reasonable
retail price. There will always be exceptions, and rare or special things
can bring more (especially from ME!). But a dealer isn’t going to pay
$20.00 for a pair of earrings they can sell at $25.00…. there is just too
little profit to be worth the work and expense.

4. Please understand that unless they know you, not many
dealers are willing to send money before seeing the goods in person. Unlike
individual sellers, dealers have a presence on line to show their
credentials. As experts, dealers may find repairs or damage that would not
be obvious to a seller. That means you must feel very safe with the person
to whom you are sending your jewelry. You should also have a clear advance
agreement of what the payment policy will be. When I buy on
approval, I guarantee that a seller will hear from me via email the day
their package arrives, and that I will either send my payment the next day or
politely decline the jewelry if there is a problem, state what that problem
is, and mail it back the next day. Asking for that kind of agreement from a
buyer is
perfectly reasonable.

Below are thoughts and links as to how to
determine what you have and how much it’s value may be.

JEWELRY VALUE

Like any antique or collectible, the value
of vintage jewelry is determined by several factors: materials,
condition, rarity, artistic merit, selling venue and current trends. Costume
jewelry has little inherent value because it is not usually made of precious
metals or gems that can be scrapped. It’s value is not measured in a standardized way, by stone
size or metal karat, but rather by
comparison to other sales in the market.

It is possible to comparison shop at
antique malls, shows and on the internet. Using the search engines, eBay or
links pages to find jewelry web sites and browse the on-line auctions for
what has SOLD (NOT how much they ASK) can add to your understanding of what
is selling well and at what price. EBay is especially good for this, and if
you are on that site, the link to auctions that have SOLD items is on the
left side of the page, scroll down a bit
to see it.

It is
amazing how much great information is on line now! It is
not definitive because there can be a wide variance between asking and
selling prices, but can give you general ideas about value. In addition, these

assess your jewelry and it’s age.

In the world of vintage jewelry, remember that condition counts heavily.
Damaged finish, missing or dull stones and broken parts drastically affect
value. We rarely purchase pieces needing major restoration as we want
to give our customers the very best most original pieces possible, and
generally, that’s all they will buy.

There are many jewelry books with
price guides, and they are fun to read and learn from. Be wary of using book values only,
though, as books can be misleading, and most of them are now old out of date
values. Some book values are set by the owner/collector of the jewelry
rather than by actual sales and therefore can be inaccurate. Also, note the
year in which the book was published as desirability can change rapidly with
the fluctuations of supply and demand, and with what’s hot and what’s not at
any given time. They can help you with identification and
jewelry history, and that is certainly handy.

Beware also of looking at the ASKING price on web sites and auctions as a
value guide. Anyone can price things too high, and the tale is really told
by CLOSED auctions where a buyer has actually made the purchase, rather than the asking prices. This has been especially true lately
when, for reasons obscure to me, asking unrealistically high prices seems to
be a growing fad. We are also seeing some bidder run up the sale price on an
auction item and then fail to pay. I have been told they do that in order to
distort the resale value, making it seem much higher, but a sale is not a
real comparable unless the item is actually paid for.

In the end, however, your jewelry is worth
only what someone is willing to pay you for it, regardless of what a book or
an asking price says, what an insurance appraisal says, or what was on "The Antiques Road Show".

SELLING VENUES

After doing the research to price your jewelry you may choose to sell it
yourself. If you wish to sell at retail prices you must usually establish a
clientele, a website, rent a mall space, or sell in an on-line auction. All
of these have costs and work associated with them. Some people will enjoy
the challenge and learning experience of doing that. I do! But it IS
work and it costs money.

If you would like to sell to a dealer, select one who specializes in the jewelry
you are selling
and who has a good reputation for fair dealing. Most dealers do not like to
play a guessing game, so have some idea of how much you want for your jewelry.
A dealer must buy at a percentage of the price for which he/she expects to
sell the jewelry. Every dealer’s percentage and the items they want to buy will vary depending on what they sell best,
what they are known for, and what they have buyers for at any given time.

As a dealer, I am often asked how I get so many wonderful pieces of jewelry.
The answer is that I pay a fair price for worthwhile pieces and I deal
honestly with sellers. Jewelry comes and goes, but a good reputation is

living. It takes time and effort to learn about any area of collecting, but
it is joyously rewarding.

to offer written or verbal appraisals or opinions. The demand for this kind
of information is absolutely too overwhelming for one dealer to fill. I love jewelry, but appraising and selling are two entirely
different businesses, and I choose selling as my business.

So take advantage of the information above, do a bit of homework and be enriched
by the experience for yourself.

PATRIOTIC JEWELRY

Say "patriotic" in the vintage
jewelry world and what first pops to mind is the wonderful jewelry from
the 1940’s…. the World War II era. It includes flags, stars, mottos,
military motifs and sentimental souvenirs, as well as anything
red-white-and-blue. Bakelite and wood jewelry were popular in part
because they were relatively inexpensive materials. Jewelry was often
made of sterling or sterling vermeil because other metals were needed
for the war effort. And Lucite was an unusual, attractive new material
invented around this time and also used in jewelry.

edelweiss and a medallion which I believe is St. Barbara, all contained in
the original lavender velvet lined case. Engraving in German says
something like, "Soldier’s good luck to my best battery", and on the
back, "True comradeship against the Italian Battery 7FK9, 1915" with many
engraved autographs.

SWAROVSKI is a name
that denotes high quality and has for many decades. They started their line
of jewelry in 1977 but long before that, in the late 1880s, they were
famous for their innovative crystal cutting techniques. They were
pioneers of high quality, high lead content crystals whose brilliance
and clarity was unmatched, and they were respected
for their crystal lenses, ornaments and rhinestones. They had an established
name long before they ever made a single piece
of finished jewelry.

Daniel Swarovski was the founder of the company and he was born in
Northern Bohemia in 1862. It was a large jewelry center at that time,
but in about 1895 he moved to Austria, where the company headquarters
remains today. The 4th and 5th generation of the family still runs the
company, and the quality is still unsurpassed. Beginning in about 1977
they started their line of costume jewelry. By 1989 their maker’s mark
was the Swarovski swan logo. Just below these paragraphs you can see some of the jewelry marks that were used over the years.

"SAL" was another earlier Swarovski jewelry mark, along with the
Edelweiss flower which was used from 1977-1988. Those two marks were on the
jewelry itself. The
Daniel Swarovski line started in 1989 and it includes accessories such
as hand bags, too. The earlier "DSCo" is not to
be confused with the later "Daniel Swarovski" high end lines.
From the late 1980s to about 2000 they also made jewelry with the
"SAVVY" name, which was a smaller scale and lower priced line. The
"Savvy" pieces were often marked with the swan logo though, and the name
"Savvy" was seen only on earring cards or tags and not on the jewelry
itself, as far as I can remember.

In the Mary Morrison book "Christmas Jewelry" there
is a paragraph on
Swarovski that says they "offered two lines of Christmas jewelry: The
Jeweler’s Collection… through department stores since about 1980, and the
newer Signature Collection… in boutiques since 1994." I don’t know the
source of her information though.

My dear friend Trudy introduced me to Swarovski jewelry years ago.
I can remember standing in front of their cases in Saks, Neiman’s and
Nordstrom and just marveling at the quality and brilliance of all the
pieces. I have some treasured pieces in my own collection, mementos of
some of the high spots in my life. Another respected friend and jewelry
researcher, Elizabeth, has helped me research the marks and when they
were used, for which I am so grateful. But I am always seeking more
information. I would like to understand more about the Daniel Swarovski
Couture line, for instance, when exactly it was made and what jewelry
pieces it included. I would also like to have the names of some of their
other series and which pieces were included in them.

Some of my favorite
Swarovski jewelry was made in the 1990s when their larger and more colorful
pieces were made. Morning Glory was a Swarovski dealer for several years
back then, as well as representing Ciner jewelry. A Swarovski flyer from
the 1990s states, "… we insist on crafting every piece of
jewelry by hand… it must first pass from hand to hand through a long
and rigorous process… featuring brilliant Austrian crystals… each
piece in the collection is hand polished front and back." According
to the company, every one of their jewelry pieces is marked without exception. Until early 2006, Swarovski sold their jewelry in better department
stores and boutiques. After that they opened their own stores, which
still thrive today.

Do beware of fakes and buy from a knowledgeable dealer. There was at
least one Asian company making copies of Swarovski pieces from the late 1990s, but while there were decent copies, the ones I
saw were not signed. There are also Christmas tree brooches made to look
like Swarovski trees and made in Asia, but again, not signed and in
this case considerably lower in
quality of both the stones and the mounts.

Swarovski has had a lot of irons in the fire over the years, also working with
other well-known artists and designers. In 2014 Atelier Swarovski introduced their first
fine jewelry collection of one-of-a-kind pieces with Swarovski gem
stones set in 18k gold. There are some spectacular pieces for sure!

The SWAROVSKI Edelweiss mark is
one of their earliest jewelry marks, if not the very earliest. I have
also seen the word "Edelweiss" spelled out on an earring back, along
with the "SAL" mark.
The Edelweiss
mark was replaced by the swan logo in 1988.

SWAROVSKI "SAL" mark
1977-1988
Stands for "Swarovski American Limited"

SWAROVSKI swan logo with copyright symbol.
They have used the swan mark from 1988 to the present, and pieces from
the Swarovski Jeweler’s Collection came with this mark, too.

SAVVY was another line made by Swarovski until the late 1990s. As far as I
recall, the name was only on the tags, cards or boxes of this simpler, less
expensive line, not on the piece of jewelry itself. The Savvy jewelry
pieces were marked with the SAL or the
swan logo. Because I have seen some SAL pieces on Savvy cards, I assume
that Savvy was made prior to 1988, as well as after that date.

D.S.CO. trademark
by
Swarovski America, Cranston,
RI.. A U.S. Federal trademark registration was filed
on Monday, August 05, 1985,
and the USPTO has
given the
D.S.CO. trademark serial number of
73551567.
The current federal status of this trademark filing is

ABANDONED. The
D.S.CO.
trademark is filed in the category of Jewelry Products, and DSCo jewelry seems to have been made after 1987.

"DS" Daniel Swarovski Sterling mark including the swan
logo and "925". The marks are "925" for sterling and the initials "DS" for
Daniel Swarovski, and the brooch this particular mark is on was circa 2000.
So far as I know, this mark was used on jewelry pieces that included faceted
crystal elements and not just pieces with pave
rhinestones only.

SWAROVSKI SCS
Swarovski Collectors Society mark.

SWAROVSKI mark on the back of a necklace clasp.

According to the book "Collecting Swarovski" by Dean A. Genth, 2004, page 8, it
says, "Daniel Swarovski Pairs: launched in July of 1989… the Daniel Swarovski
Paris collection is an innovative collection of haute couture accessories…"

"…the DSP collections offers elegant and refined handbags for day
and night, as well as unique costume jewelry pieces… In addition, DS Home
Accessories, an upscale line of crystal-driven, functional home decor
objects such as lamps, candleholders and paperweights, was launched in
2002".

DANIEL SWAROVSKI in an oval mark. One place this mark has has been seen is
on jewelry that has large unusually shaped prong-set rhinestones rather than
the cast set

with a center blue rhinestone and clear rhinestone pave, all set in a
hand polished gold plated setting, 2-5/8" by 2". This is a limited
edition piece and stamped on the back "Limited Edition 300" and the swan
logo. This particular brooch was number 34 out of the 300 made. It is in excellent
condition and was made in 1993.
The card that came with it says, "Inspired by the heraldic motifs and
pageantry of the Middle Ages, this brooch captures the majesty of the
European Medieval Period. The Jeweled Shield has been meticulously
handcrafted and adorned with Swarovski Austrian crystals in the deep
jewel colors reminiscent of Gothic stained glass windows."

There was a Swarovski Crystal Society
(SCS) Trunk Tour in 1999. At that show Swarovski introduced over forty of some of the
best brooches they ever made. The
"Crystal Garden Collection", a part of that tour, was comprised of twelve brooches
including the wheelbarrow, bouquet, basket
pins (shown below) and the watering can,
purple wrapped berry, pearl grapes, jonquil and clear pave pear, rose, daffodil
and carnation pins. These were some of the
twelve pins of this collection, which was a part of
those forty-six brooches. I
wish I had the entire list of all of those brooches, but so far I only know some
of them. There were also matching bracelets and earrings for some of these
pieces.

1997 pink, lavender and jonquil yellow rhinestone butterfly brooch in a
gold plated setting, 2-1/3" by 1-1/3". The swan logo is on the back right
behind the head, and the back has a lovely textured design mimicking the
butterfly’s wings. In this year Swarovski made several pieces in this
lovely pink and yellow combination, and an entire tray of them was hard to
resist! I recall hearts, flowers and leaves in these colors, too.

1-1/3". This is one of the Swarovski SCS (Swarovski Crystal Society) pieces
from 1993. This comes complete with it’s original cylindrical foam lined
box, the pouch, and it’s booklet.
The booklet, which was printed in Switzerland, says, "This certificate guarantees the authenticity of The
Elephant Brooch as being an original design, hand set with brilliant
Swarovski full cut crystals. It is also certified that this offer is limited
until the end of 1994 and to two pieces per member. Specially commissioned

Made from Swarovski crystals, the flies, bees,
birds and butterflies
in this series are called "The Paradise Collection" and were unveiled to greet the new
millennium. According to the accompanying booklet, "The allure and
mystique of the Parisian fashion world provided an inspiring backdrop
for the artists who created the designs of this first collection.
Combining specially created multi-colored crystal stones with the
preciousness of gold plated sterling silver… reminiscent of the Art
Nouveau movement", there were 41 pieces of jewelry and ornaments plus
scarves made using these designs. The booklet that came with these
pieces is illustrated with tiny color photos of the pieces in the
collection.

In the Swarovski booklets included with one of these pieces it says,
"Daniel Swarovski Paris combines the worlds of fashion accessories,
design objects and gifts in a concept within which crystal represents an
ideal material for expressing contemporary style". I have seen
purses with this mark on a tag inside, too.

These birds are faceted crystals on sterling, and they are so reflective and
lovely. There were other pieces in this bird collection, and I will show
them here when I have some.

It is in excellent condition in every way and has obviously been well cared
for in the past. The beading of the crystals is a stars and shells motif.
Made of silk with a gold rope draw string and gold adjuster which also has
small crystals, the sides and outside bottom are very soft and velvety
blonde Python skin. This is a real treasure in every way.

Daniel Swarovski Collection

To quote the owner of three of the pieces in the row below, "The company introduced the Couture Collection in 1989 and called it Daniel
Swarovski in honor of the founder. I got this bracelet in July of 2008,
so
the bracelet was made sometime between 1989 and 2008.

I went to the Swarovski website and found jewelry from the Couture
Collection on that site. It was very expensive and featured big brilliant
stones, as did my bracelet.

But the Daniel Swarovski line seems to have been made in Europe, maybe
Austria, where the company is, or Paris because that is one of the marks on
some pieces.

"And,
the way these are made, and others with these marks that appear to have
some age, is also more along the lines of the technique called "layout".
That is how Schreiner, D&E Juliana, Vrba, Sorrell, and others are made
by hand
soldering the cups that the stones are placed into to make the form and then the
stones go in. This process is labor intensive, one stone at a time. That is how many of the fine
French fashion jewelers made their things — Roger Jean Pierre, Roger Schemama, Maryse Blanchard, etc. They did not use cast pieces into which
rhinestones were glued.

The Daniel Swarovski Couture line seems to be made
up of hand manipulated rather than cast pieces, and with large unusually shaped
stones. It focuses more on the crystal than the metal.

The same velvet bag, but in gray and with Daniel Swarovski stamped on it,
came with this line."

Swarovski Savvy

From the late 1980s to about 2000
Swarovski also made jewelry with the "SAVVY" name, which was a smaller
scale and lower priced line. The "Savvy" pieces were often marked with
the swan logo though, and the name "Savvy" was seen only on earring
cards, boxes or tags and not on the jewelry itself, as far as I can remember.
Some Savvy pieces even came in Swarovski boxes.

CINER Jewelry Company, begun in New York in 1892 by Emanuel Ciner, moved into the arena of
costume jewelry in about 1930. Often designed to look like fine jewelry,
the quality is first class and the look rich and well crafted. They
continue to make jewelry to this day, and it is favored by many famous
clients. The use of small brilliant stones and rich enamels are two of
their signatures in jewelry design.

CINER silver tone flower brooch with coral stamen tips, lovely pierced
leaves and clear rhinestones that have turned slightly gray. The Ciner mark and
the number "’39" in a small circle are on the back, and other marks are lightly
scratched on the back, too, but I don’t know what the significance of them is.
It is 3" by 2". The ’39 could be a date as it is about when I think this could
have been made. Earlier Ciner like this is not easy to find and this is a
really nice brooch in excellent condition except for the slightly graying
