These plaques were often done in Austria and sent to Whitby, England, to be mounted in jet for jewelry.
They show a young Tyrolean boy, also called the "gypsy boy" or "green boy". The brooch is 2-1/3 by 2" and the earrings for pierced ears are a total length of 2-1/4" including the wires. There is some crazing on back of the earrings on the jet part only, but it does look stable.
For a similar piece see page 32 in Helen Muller's wonderful book "Jet Jewellery and Ornaments", a wonderful book for jet jewelry lovers. View View View
