FEATURE: FILIGREE JEWELRY
| The process of making FILIGREE jewelry is skilled, labor intensive, and made up of multiple elements. Some of those elements are the frame or border wire, a single sometimes flattened wire used to contain other wire designs. There is also a coiled matt, a twisted and then flattened group of wires used within the frame to create a design element or a base for other elements. Another is the twisted two-wire wrap, with wires wound around each other and used to make filler designs, such as the paisley shaped parts used alone or as parts of flowers for instance. A "filled rosetta" is a flower shaped filled element, sometimes cupped, that can be fastened to a base or used as a link . And occasionally there is a form of granulated work used along with filigree, where fine beads or small shapes are applied to a surface to create a pattern. The filigree technique was done in karat gold, sterling and lower grade silver, and in every form of jewelry as well as small objects. Thought to have originally been used by the Egyptians, it continued across the centuries and has been made in many countries.

The development process for these pieces may stem from an original idea, a nursery rhyme or a famous painting or personality. Cameos are one type or stylized portrait, as are the hand painted panels set into some of the Victorian jet jewelry. Hand painted pictures can also be incorporated into a piece of jewelry. And designs can be etched, cut or engraved into a metal to create a scene. At the right here are two silver jewelry scenes of courting couples, so charming! And below that is a wonderful brooch of a stork wading in a pond. Collecting scenic or portrait jewelry is another interesting idea.
