FEATURE: ANTIQUE JEWELRY

Antique jewelry is, by definition, over 100 years old. It is beautifully evocative of its era, fashions and the mores of the time in which it was made. There is a fabulous book called "Jewellery in the Age of Queen Victoria: A Mirror to the World" by Gere & Rudoe (available on Amazon.com) and while it is a huge book that you cannot read in a day, I do recommend it highly. It is full of wonderful jewelry and absolutely stuffed with information.

Whether a family heirloom or a recent find, antique jewelry continues to fascinate collectors and jewelry lovers alike. The sentiment, history, craftsmanship and whimsy lures new collectors and historians to this day. Everyday people treasured these wonderful echoes of the past, and we are fortunate that so many of them have been handed down to our generation to wear, protect and enjoy. Here at Morning Glory we add amazing antique pieces every month. Be sure to come see them on our web site.

FEATURE: EDWARDIAN JEWELRY

THe EDWARDIAN era was from 1901 to 1911, the reign of King Edward VII, and for some this period extends even to the beginning of WWI.

With the passing time a new jewelry era falls into the "antique" category, and as we have moved into the 21st Century, Edwardian jewelry is an example of this. Lighter in weight, often using filigree settings, white gold and platinum and highlighting different parts of a womans body, it is a collectible category that interests many collectorsbecause it is so easily wearable today . Art Nouveau had an impact on design, as did the socially outgoing, partying, traveling nature of King Edward and his Court compared to the more strict and staid era of Queen Victorias reign..

To suit this new mood, clothing fabrics were lighter weight even though corsets were still worn and dresses still touched the ground or close to it. Women were feminine with hair piled atop their heads and dangling earrings. Even artist Charles Dana Gibsons "Gibson Girl" made her appearance in advertising during this general era. Her look was considered the look of beauty from the late 1800s to the beginning of WWI.
