FEATURE: RINGS

In the 1856 book "Inquire Within for Anything You Want to Know" by G.G. Evans, the symbolism if wearing rings on the left hand is described. A ring worn on the first finger signals a man desiring a wife, or a woman not spoken for. A ring worn the second finger signals an engaged person, and on the third finger a married person. A person who plans never to marry wears a ring on the little finger.

By custom, wedding rings are worn on the third finger of the left hand. In the 1856 book "Inquire Within for Anything You Want to Know" by G.G. Evans, two explanations are given for this custom. One goes back to Roman times, when a ring was worn on the fourth finger of the left hand because it was believed that a nerve ran from there to the heart. In Christian custom, the third finger symbolizes the Trinity.

FEATURE: WOOD Jewelry

One way to survive hard times is with wit, a sense of humor and an appreciation for the absurd. The 1930 to the 1950s, Depression years followed by war years, brought about some of the wittiest and most absurd jewelry of the 20th century, and some of the most fun to wear. Wood jewelry was either assembled, as with the wood bead necklaces mixed with plastic, glass and other materials, or carved and painted, as with many of the the figural brooches. Many pieces of wood jewelry were also combined with bakelite and Lucite. Fashioned by both jewelry companies and home crafters, the designs seem endless and the creativity amazing. You can even find the same pattern of brooch in both wood and bakelite pieces.
