FEATURE: INSECT Jewelry

I have had a soft spot for insect jewelry for many years. It started in early high school when we wore bug sets trooping over the top of a shoulder and down the back. The Victorians enjoyed them as a part of their passion for nature and natural history, and they made them in many different materials, including using the real insects themselves. We have had some colorful scarab beetle pieces over the years in lovely reflective blues and greens.

The Egyptian influence of the Deco era saw insects used in a less realistic and more stylized form and again, made of many materials as well. The clean lines and unusual forms make Deco jewelry very special and easy to wear.

By the 1940s and beyond, rhinestone bug jewelry lit up many a dress and sweater, and those are among my favorites. Why wear one piece when 3 or 4 are so much more interesting, on a shoulder, cuff or pocket. Some of these creations even have trembler wings or antennae.

FEATURE: BUTTERFLY Jewelry

We had more butterflies than usual in our back yard garden this year, especially the dramatic Monarchs with their black and yellow coloring. One reason I enjoy butterfly jewelry is that it, too, tends to be very brilliant and colorful. Not only butterflys forms, but their actual wings as well have been used in jewelry over the years. While they are all fun, I prefer the rhinestone versions that emphasize how colorful these creatures are in nature.

As a symbol, the butterfly is the transformation of the soul in many cultures, as well as rebirth. Two butterflies in the air together are the sign of lovers in the Chinese culture.

The patterns and coloring of butterflies in nature help them be identified by their mates or avoided by their enemies. Some are even designed so as to hide in plain site. While the butterfly has a relative short life span, the jewelry can last forever.
