HOBE JEWELRY
~ In American from 1927
to 1992 ~
Hobe et Cie was founded in Paris in 1887 by Jacques Hobe. His concept was
to use fine jewelry techniques and non-precious materials to create
jewelry for the middle class as well as for the wealthy. Brought to America in 1915 by his son William, Hobe jewelry was
popular not only with everyday customers, but also with the Hollywood stars
and such luminaries as Flo Ziegfield. Inspired by period jewelry of
the past, Hobe jewelry often had an historic flavor.

The name HOBE is synonymous with quality, especially in their earlier
pieces. Although they made buckles and accessories in the late 1800s,
their costume jewelry pieces from the 1930-50’s years are my personal
favorites. Their gold plated sterling silver wire-work filigree designs
and fabulous stones, sometimes semi-precious or synthetic stones, create a unique old-world style. When they combine
figural objects into their jewelry, such as in the elephant brooch below, they
take creativity to a new high. The purse frames, done in conjunction with
Josef, makers of fine purses, are works of art.

HOBE STERLING JEWELRY
circa 1940-1945
The hand wrought sterling silver settings from this era,
sometimes also gold plated,
are masterfully hand wrought and the rhinestones are brilliant.
Charolite, moonstones, gadolinium garnets, spinels, rhinestones and
semi-precious gems stones are featured in some of these wonderful
pieces, as well as in some of the Hobe jewelry on

HOBE
sterling silver brooch with an oval purple charolite cabochon
center surrounded by rose pink colored saddle cut gadolinium garnet
synthetic stones in hand made collet settings. Charolite is a fairly rare
stone, sometimes referred to as a stone of transformation. The signature
"Hobe sterling" is on a triangular plaque which dates it between 1933 and
1957, and the brooch is 2" by 2". Each of the stones is collet
or bezel set with sterling silver flower and bead work around it, and this
detail is lovely and high quality, entirely hand made. NOTE: Any white
marks you see on the center stones are just reflections from our windows as the stone has
no flaws at all. This is from the same group as the Hobe pendant
#O41839, and they look wonderful together! View

HOBE
sterling silver pendant necklace with an oval purple charolite
cabochon center surrounded by rose pink saddle cut gadolinium garnet
synthetic stones in a hand made setting with flowers on the clasp. Charolite
is a fairly rare stone, sometimes referred to as a stone of transformation.
There are no marks on the necklace except the word "sterling" but I have no
doubt it’s by Hobe as I have other pieces in this group that are signed. The
pendant is 2" by 1-1/2" on the 20" long with a pretty flower decorating the
box clasp. Each of the stones is collet set with sterling silver flower and
bead work around it, and this detail is lovely and high quality, entirely
hand made. NOTE: Any white marks you see on the center stones are just
reflections from our windows, and the stone has no flaws at all. This
is from the same group as our Hobe brooch #O42169 and they look wonderful

HOBE
sterling silver pendant and chain necklace with a green cabochon center surrounded by
rose pink saddle cut gadolinium synthetic garnet stones in a hand made
setting with flowers on the clasp. The green cabochon is probably dyed green chalcedony quartz, we have seen them used in similar Hobe pieces
from this era. The pendant and chain are signed "Hobe sterling" on the
back of the clasp and "sterling" on the back of the pendant in tiny letters.
The pendant is 2" by 1-1/2" and it is on an 18" long chain with a pretty flower decorating
the box clasp. Each of the stones is collet set with sterling silver flower
and bead work around it, and the detail is lovely and high quality as well
as entirely
hand made. This
is from the same group as another Hobe pendant and brooch #O41839 and

beautiful. There is a tiny flea bite on one of the pink stones,
mentioned only for accuracy because it can only be seen under magnification,
and even then it is hard to find.

HOBE sterling silver and
colorful rhinestones brooch with pink, purple and pastel blue

had not seen before, a bit like a winter snow sleigh.

HOBE
very rare sterling and rhinestone purse ornament or buckle, a
huge 5" by 3-1/3"! It was probably a purse ornament with clips on the
back to hold it in place, or a buckle. Spectacular is the perfect word
for this, both in size and design. All hand made circa 1950, the leaves
and coils are masterfully wrought and you will not see a lot of these
around. There are some minute flea bites on a few of the rhinestones,
but you need a loupe to see them, and the detailed intricate sterling
work is just spectacular. On the back are long silver hooks but I
can’t see what they were used for, and one is missing it’s tip. A
clever person could use this in more than one way, and it deserves being
saved somehow.

HOBE DETAILS AND FINDINGS

HOBE often used spiral wire wraps around
the main stones in a piece, and this row shows some good examples of that.

The photos in this row show a
simple style of HOBE bezel setting for the major stone in a piece. The
style of the little
flowers and leaves are also worth noting.

The same simple HOBE bezel setting for the main
stone as well as lots of scrolled wire work around the smaller stones.

As well as the same simple setting, note
the lovely little flowers that decorate this brooch by HOBE.

HOBE often used these small metal four
petal flowers in their designs.

HOBE used a few different styles of wire
wrapped flowers and leaves to decorate a piece and this row shows some good
examples.

HOBE used some very interesting and unusual stones during the 1940s.

This shows the five petal flower also favored by HOBE in the 1940s.

HOBE brooch with lots of intricate hand wrought
wire work that decorates it masterfully.

A HOBE bracelet with flowers and leaves as well
as
lovely hand wrought filigree wire work.

HOBE used both screw back and clip back earrings. As far as I know,
Robert, who made some of their jewelry similar to Hobe, used only clip
backs.

DEROSA signed bracelet made very much in the style
of Hobe.
