HOBE JEWELRY
~ In American from 1927
to 1992 ~
Hobe et Cie was founded in Paris in 1887 by Jacques Hobe. His concept was
to use fine jewelry techniques and non-precious materials to create
jewelry for the middle class as well as for the wealthy. Brought to America in 1915 by his son William, Hobe jewelry was
popular not only with everyday customers, but also with the Hollywood stars
and such luminaries as Flo Ziegfield. Inspired by period jewelry of
the past, Hobe jewelry often had an historic flavor.

The name HOBE is synonymous with quality, especially in their earlier
pieces. Although they made buckles and accessories in the late 1800s,
their costume jewelry pieces from the 1930-50’s years are my personal
favorites. Their gold plated sterling silver wire-work filigree designs
and fabulous stones, sometimes semi-precious or synthetic stones, create a unique old-world style. When they combine
figural objects into their jewelry, such as in the elephant brooch below, they
take creativity to a new high. The purse frames, done in conjunction with
Josef, makers of fine purses, are works of art.

HOBE and their wonderful hand wrought gilt wire work and rhinestone jewelry from circa 1940-1950
are some of my very favorites.
Some pieces of the Hobe jewelry from this era are set with semi-precious
stones and some with brilliant rhinestones, both often unfoiled. The
hand fashioned wire work is masterful, adding to the appeal of this
jewelry.

HOBE
rare and spectacular bracelet made of rose red glass cabochons, all
with a starburst center, and unfoiled clear rhinestones in a gold plated
silver setting. It is 7" wearable length and 1-1/4" widest at the front,
with the braided chain back about 1" wide. This was hand made in the later
1940s with lots of filigree wire work and it is not signed, though an
obvious Hobe piece. Each rosy red cabochon has a star shape on the back that
shows through to the front, a very special look. The three hinged panels
make up the front for a comfortable fit and the clasp is large, secure and
easy to manage. There is one small place where the mesh on the back may
have been repaired, difficult to see unless it is pointed out, and it could
be from when it was originally made. The wonderful color and intricate
handmade wire filigree work adds to it’s beauty, and it still has it’s
safety chain. This is a very special piece, the best of Hobe jewelry.

rare heart shaped brooch with pastel rhinestones and dangling
teardrop shaped drops. The colors are pink, aqua and clear unfoiled
rhinestones set in gilt hand wrought wirework in the 1940s, size 2-1/4" by

rhinestone on the right, but it is visible only under magnification. There
is a flip-up loop on the back to put a chain through if you want to wear
this as a pendant necklace. This is not signed but it is a Hobe design that I have seen in
their earrings, and these were made in this very same design.

HOBE
multi-colored bracelet, brooch and earrings set circa 1940s. The
unfoiled rhinestones let light pass through, and the colors include pastel blue red, pink,
aqua, yellow, and lavender. The bracelet is 7" by 5/8"; the brooch is 2-5/8" by
1-1/2"; the screw back earrings are 7/8" each. The bracelet and brooch are
signed but the earrings are not, typical for this style of earring. The center
pale blue rhinestone on the brooch has a microscopic flea bite at one edge, not
even as big as a pencil point and invisible to the naked eye. There are a few of
the same flea bites on the bracelet, too, so it is priced taking that into
consideration. It is an amazing set!.

DeROSA & HOBE

that. Made just like a Hobe bracelet, it is signed "DeRosa". As far as I
know, there was no connection between the two companies, but these are SO
similar that it does make me wonder. I wish I knew for sure, and if you
do, please email and let me know.

DEROSA
bracelet in the 1940s Hobe style with unfoiled
rhinestones in green, golden and pale yellow set in silver hand made
wire work filigree, 6-3/4" by 2" wide at the front and 1/2" wide at the
back, circa 1940s. Jointed links make this flexible to wrap around the
wrist comfortably, and it is in very good vintage condition with no
missing stones and no damage or repairs. This is signed "DeRosa"
on the back.

DEROSA and HOBE bracelet
clasps. While these are both typically Hobe looking, the top
one is signed "DeRosa" and the bottom "Hobe". I wish I still had a shot of the front of this
DeRosa bracelet, but I sold it long ago. The similarity is amazing and yet there is no
documented connection I am aware of between Hobe and DeRosa.

HOBE STERLING JEWELRY
circa 1940-1945
The hand wrought sterling silver settings from this era,
sometimes also gold plated,
are masterfully hand wrought and the rhinestones are brilliant. Moonstones, spinels,
rhinestones and semi-precious gems stones are featured in some of these wonderful pieces,
as well as in some of the Hobe jewelry above.

HOBE
green rhinestones bracelet in sterling silver and 14k yellow gold plate, made in
the mid-1940s. The center rhinestone has light wear along
the top faceted edge, so even though that cannot be seen except under
magnification, it is being priced "as is". It is marked "Hobe sterling
1/20th 14k" on the back. Be sure to see the close up photo because the hand
wrought sterling flowers, leaves and coils are
masterfully created. The bracelet has it’s safety chain and is 6-3/4"
by 1-1/4". Pieces of this group can be seen in Carole Tanenbaums

The hand wrought flowers and leaves are beautifully crafted. This is signed on the back
Hobe sterling 1/20th 14k" and it is a 1940s Hobe brooch. While
there are small areas of wear on the rhinestone, which are hard to see without
magnification, the silver setting of this brooch is in excellent vintage

made as a clip. Pieces of this group can be seen in Carole Tanenbaums

HOBE
very rare sterling and rhinestone purse ornament or buckle, a
huge 5" by 3-1/3"! It was probably a purse ornament with clips on the
back to hold it in place, or a buckle. Spectacular is the perfect word
for this, both in size and design. All hand made circa 1950, the leaves
and coils are masterfully wrought and you will not see a lot of these
around. There are some minute flea bites on a few of the rhinestones,
but you need a loupe to see them, and the detailed intricate sterling
work is just spectacular. On the back are long silver hooks but I
can’t see what they were used for, and one is missing it’s tip. A
clever person could use this in more than one way, and it deserves being
saved somehow.

HOBE DETAILS AND FINDINGS

HOBE often used spiral wire wraps around
the main stones in a piece, and this row shows some good examples of that.

The photos in this row show a
simple style of HOBE bezel setting for the major stone in a piece. The
style of the little
flowers and leaves are also worth noting.

The same simple HOBE bezel setting for the main
stone as well as lots of scrolled wire work around the smaller stones.

As well as the same simple setting, note
the lovely little flowers that decorate this brooch by HOBE.

HOBE often used these small metal four
petal flowers in their designs.

HOBE used a few different styles of wire
wrapped flowers and leaves to decorate a piece and this row shows some good
examples.

HOBE used some very interesting and unusual stones during the 1940s.

This shows the five petal flower also favored by HOBE in the 1940s.

HOBE brooch with lots of intricate hand wrought
wire work that decorates it masterfully.

as
lovely hand wrought filigree wire work.

HOBE used both screw back and clip back earrings. As far as I know,
Robert, who made some of their jewelry similar to Hobe, used only clip
backs.

DEROSA signed bracelet made very much in the style
of Hobe.
