HOBE JEWELRY
~ In American from 1927
to 1992 ~
Hobe et Cie was founded in Paris in 1887 by Jacques Hobe. His concept was
to use fine jewelry techniques and non-precious materials to create
jewelry for the middle class as well as for the wealthy. Brought to America in 1915 by his son William, Hobe jewelry was
popular not only with everyday customers, but also with the Hollywood stars
and such luminaries as Flo Ziegfield. Inspired by period jewelry of
the past, Hobe jewelry often had an historic flavor.
The name HOBE is synonymous with quality, especially in their earlier
pieces. Although they made buckles and accessories in the late 1800s,
their costume jewelry pieces from the 1930-50’s years are my personal
favorites. Their gilt sterling wire-work designs
and fabulous stones, sometimes semi-precious or synthetic stones, create a unique old-world style. When they combine
figural objects into their jewelry, such as in the elephant brooch below, they
take creativity to a new high. The purse frames, done in conjunction with
Josef, makers of fine purses, are works of art.

HOBE and their wonderful hand wrought gilt wire work and rhinestone jewelry from circa 1940-1950
are some of my very favorites.
Some pieces of the Hobe jewelry from this era are set with semi-precious
stones and some with brilliant rhinestones, both often unfoiled. The
hand fashioned wire work is masterful, adding to the appeal of this
jewelry.

HOBE rare and spectacular bracelet made of rose red glass cabochons, the
center one with a starburst, and unfoiled clear rhinestones in a gold plated
silver setting. It is 7" wearable length and 1-1/4" widest at the front,
with the braided chain back about 1" wide. This was hand made in the later
1940s with lots of delicate flowers, leaves and bows and it is not signed.
Each rosy red cabochon has a star shape on the back that shows through to
the front, a very special look. The three hinged panels that make up the
front are for a comfortable fit and the clasp is large, secure and easy to
manage. There is one small place where the mesh on the back has been
repaired, difficult to see unless it is pointed out. The wonderful color
and intricate handmade wire filigree work adds to it’s beauty, and it still
has it’s safety chain. This is a very special piece of the best of Hobe
jewelry.

HOBE sterling silver dress clip with a center pink stone
surrounded by bullet cabochons in green, marked only "sterling" on the back, 3" by

stones are probably saddle cut gadolinium garnet synthetic stones, just
beautiful. There is a tiny flea bite on one of the pink stones,

HOBE
sterling silver pendant and chain necklace with a green cabochon center surrounded by
rose pink saddle cut gadolinium synthetic garnet stones in a hand made
setting with flowers on the clasp. The green cabochon is probably dyed green chalcedony quartz, we have seen them used in similar Hobe pieces
from this era. The pendant and chain are signed "Hobe sterling" on the
back of the clasp and "sterling" on the back of the pendant in tiny letters.
The pendant is 2" by 1-1/2" and it is on an 18" long chain with a pretty flower decorating
the box clasp. Each of the stones is collet set with sterling silver flower
and bead work around it, and the detail is lovely and high quality as well
as entirely
hand made. This
is from the same group as another Hobe pendant and brooch #O41839 and

work with a center half-round, and there are charms suspended from it
with 2 charms missing. Each brooch is marked on the back "Hobe
sterling", and they are each 1-1/2" by 1-1/4. The shorter chain is 8"
long and the longer one is 10". The charms include a dancing woman, an
urn, three owls sitting in a circle, a child in a cape and a triskelion
(three armored legs running), and they are each about 1" long. It was
probably made in the 1940s, and the ad shown

HOBE DETAILS AND FINDINGS
|
|
HOBE often used spiral wire wraps around
the main stones in a piece, and this row shows some good examples of that. |
|
|
The photos in this row show a
simple style of HOBE bezel setting for the major stone in a piece. The
style of the little
flowers and leaves are also worth noting. |
|
The same simple HOBE bezel setting for the main
stone as well as lots of scrolled wire work around the smaller stones.
|
As well as the same simple setting, note
the lovely little flowers that decorate this brooch by HOBE.
|
HOBE often used these small metal four
petal flowers in their designs.
|
HOBE used a few different styles of wire
wrapped flowers and leaves to decorate a piece and this row shows some good
examples. |
HOBE used some very interesting and unusual stones during the 1940s. |
This shows the five petal flower also favored by HOBE in the 1940s. |
HOBE brooch with lots of intricate hand wrought
wire work that decorates it masterfully.
|
A HOBE bracelet with flowers and leaves as well
as
lovely hand wrought wire work. |
HOBE used both screw back and clip back earrings. As far as I know,
Robert, who made some of their jewelry similar to Hobe, used only clip
backs. |
DEROSA signed bracelet made very much in the style
of Hobe.
|
|
Two of the typical styles of dress clip
findings used by HOBE in the 1940s. |

made by well-known purse maker Josef, and the frame by Hobe, circa 1950.
At the bottom, the ad says, "… evening bags by Josef… jewelry to match,
bracelets $79.50, pin clips $35.00, earrings $19.75." Next to each purse
is a price ranging from $125.00 to $175.00. That was a very high price
back in 1950 when the average car was only $1,500.00!

HOBE Josef purse with hand embroidered and beaded body by Josef and
rhinestone and gold tone frame by Hobe, unsigned. It is marked on a tag
inside "Bags by Josef hand beaded in the USA", body 11-1/2" by 5-1/2",
frame 8-1/2" by 1-3/4". This is in excellent condition with lovely
unfoiled cabochons and rhinestones set into the gold tone frame in the
colors of aqua, pink, plum and clear. They are really reflective and set
off the hand beaded body beautifully. Circa 1950, the purse is all
fitted on the inside and has a tiny cute clear plastic comb there, too.
The tag inside says, "Bags by Josef Hand Beaded USA". Also shown here is
a jpg of a vintage ad showing Hobe purses and giving the prices, back in
the 1950’s, as between $125.00 and $175.00, expensive back then.

HOBE framed Josef purse with a glorious frame with a central faceted aqua
rhinestone surrounded by moonstone cabochons and brilliant rhinestones in pink,
green and clear. They are set in a gold wire work with little flowers. The body is hand beaded with white glass beads in pinks,
rose, aqua, green and gold colors. It is 9" wide at the bottom and 7" top
to bottom. The wonderful
DETAIL shows in the rhinestone drop latch, which operates perfectly, and the
purse is
lined in cream colored fabric. Inside are two matching flap pockets
with more pink and clear rhinestones, one with a mirror inside and one for
coins. Made in about 1950, it is signed inside "Josef" and their logo.
The past photo shows an advertisement for these marvelous purses. This
purse is in excellent vintage condition in every way, a real collector’s piece
that can also be used.

compact in plum, blue and pale yellow rhinestones set in that fabulous
Hobe gilt filigree, a rare piece circa 1950, 2-1/4" by 3-1/4". While this is not
signed it is easily recognized as a Hobe. The mirror and a powder
compartment are inside, used but clean and with no puff. Marked inside
"Patent 1,802,796 Made in USA". That is a 1931 patent issued to W.E. Wacker
for the catch and compact.

HOBE compact
with aqua, pink and clear unfoiled rhinestones set in handmade gold tone filigree,
which allows me to make this attribution. It’s layered and lush
with rhinestones, but it’s not signed, 3-1/4" by 3-1/8".
It opens by pushing down on the front latch to reveal a mirror with some
foggy areas, a place for powder and a place for a thin square puff,
which is not present. The rhinestones and wirework are in
excellent vintage condition, and it was probably made in the late 1940s.
Rare and you don’t see these very often, and this one is a beauty!

GENEVIEVE
black velvet purse with what may or may not be a Hobe frame in clear rhinestones, frame
6" by 1", body 8-1/2" by 5-1/2". The velvet is beautifully gathered and there is
a strap on the back so you can carry it as a clutch. Hobe purse frames are
rarely if ever signed, and this one is no different, so I could be incorrect about
it being their frame. Inside the purse though is a very faint wording along the
line of, "Genevieve M… Gerstle", and I couldn’t find any information on that
maker.

HOBE framed purse with pastel aqua, pink, rose and lavender unfoiled
rhinestones set in a gold tone filigree wire work. The purse has a
black satin body with slight rose tints on the front, and a lining with
pockets and a flip-up and handle, made in about 1950 1950.
The frame is not signed, but that is typical for the Hobe purse frames, they
weren’t signed. There is light wear on the gathered area at the top, but the rest
is in excellent vintage condition, total size 11" by 9-1/2".
