| Feature: CAMEOS

What is more classic and timeless than a cameo? Though they pre-date the Victorian era, for the travel-loving Victorians a cameo was a favorite, possibly representing a meaningful souvenir of a Grand European Tour. Both men and women wore cameos set as necklaces, brooch, rings and earrings for women, and watch fobs, rings and stick pins for men. The Victorian fascination with all things historic is demonstrated in the classical Greek profiles and mythological motifs. Reflecting the Victorians love of gardening and nature, floral cameos were also popular. Carved in seashell, ivory, lava, stone, and jet, cameos could be set in precious or non-precious metals, some wealthy patrons even had their own likenesses done. Although thought of as primarily an Italian art, there were also cameo carvers in America and other countries. Cameos remained popular well into the 20th century and were even fashioned using "new" materials of the 30s and 40s, Bakelite and Lucite.

| FEATURE: WOOD JEWELRY
| One way to survive hard times is with wit... a sense of humor and an appreciation for the absurd. The 1930 to the 1950s, Depression years followed by war years, brought about some of the wittiest and most absurd jewelry of the 20th century, and some of the most fun to wear. Wood jewelry was either assembled, as the wood beads mixed with plastic, glass and other materials, or carved and painted, as were the whimsical figurals.. Fashioned by both jewelry companies and home crafters, the designs seem endless and the creativity amazing. A gallery of WOOD JEWELRY can be seen here. WOOD jewelry that is for sale can be seen HERE.
| REFERENCE: Jewel Chat EISENBERG JEWELRY ADVERTISING
| One of the most exciting reference sources for attributing and dating vintage jewelry is the advertising in magazines from years past. These wonderful old ads illustrate how jewelry was worn, when it was made, and how it coordinated with the styles of the time. Eisenberg has made jewelry for over eight decades, from the 1930s to the present. Eisenberg marks include "EISENBERG" in all capital block letters, 1945-1958; "Eisenberg Originals" 1935-1945; "Eisenberg Sterling" 1943-1948; and "Eisenberg Ice", 1970-present. Some early Eisenberg pieces are unsigned, and there was also a period in the late 1970s to the 1990s when the company did not mark their jewelry. EISENBERG advertisements for reference can be seen HERE. More information about EISENBERG jewelry is in Jewel Chat, HERE. A gallery of Eisenberg jewelry can be seen in Morning Glory Collects HERE.
