WOOD JEWELRY

One way to survive hard times is with wit… a sense of
humor and an appreciation for the absurd. The 1930’s and 1940’s, Depression
years followed by war years, brought about some of the wittiest and most
absurd jewelry of the 20th century, and some of the most fun to wear.

Wood jewelry was either assembled, as the wood beads mixed
with plastic, glass and other materials, or carved and painted, as the
figurals shown below. Fashioned by jewelry companies and home crafters, the
designs seem endless, and the creativity amazing.

Wooden beads combined with plastic flowers were strung to make necklaces,
pins and bracelets. Strung on braided leather, gold tone chain or

The beads and findings may be similar, and though all are unsigned and the
maker unidentified, the style of finishing can give clues to the origin of
some of this jewelry. I believe the wood clips at the far left
and far right are early Miriam Haskell pieces. The middle clip is probably
Czech, though Deanna Cera has a picture
of one similar to this wood and straw clip in her book,
"Amazing Gems". (View it here).
She says it was made in Italy circa 1940.

Notice the two Haskell-attributed pieces have a similar style and are
finished with the same attention to detail. Each cascade of wooden beads
ends with a tiny glass seed bead, and the overall shape and combination of
elements is artistically pleasing.

Ron and Ester Shultz, husband & wife, have made some of the most charming,
colorful and interesting bakelite ever crafted. They utilize older pieces of
bakelite from the 1930-40s which they cut, carve, laminate and paint to
create their pieces. It was good to speak with
Ron & Esther about their work
and what it means to them.

Question: How did you begin working
with bakelite, Ester?

Ester:
When we started making bakelite jewelry in the late 1980s, we were on the
antique show circuit. We would travel many miles each week to do a show
and be home as often as we could to make more pieces to sell. It was a hard work
but we loved it.

When we did see bakelite and begin to
learn about it we saw it’s potential and loved the colors.

We collected buttons by the hundreds
back then and
that is how we started making the necklaces that put
us in the business. We still like the buttons and look for them but they have
gotten very rare and expensive.

SHULTZ
bakelite red apple and worm brooch with amazing laminated worm, butterscotch
and black laminated details, 3". The worm itself was amazingly hard
work…it is all laminated to make the turn in his neck. It is one of the
most difficult pieces Ron ever made. This piece is in the book "Bakelite
Pins" by Karima Parry, page 157.

Question: How did Ron get
started working with bakelite?

Ron & Ester: Ron found a big Bakelite clear
ball at a flea market here in
Florida one day, took a hack saw to it and sawed it into slices. From of one of
the slices he turned out a wonderful little dolphin. His tail was
curved and his fins were wavy. That was the first ever Shultz piece.

We both had a hand in the carving of the pieces. It was a such fun.
It took many years of work and experimentation to arrive at the quality of work
that we do today. Every day was a learning experience and we are still learning.
It has been well over 20 years now.

Question: Do you keep an archive or
pictures of your own pieces?

Ron & Ester: We do not have a collection of our jewelry.
It has all gone out the door almost as soon as it was made. When we did the
shows, we would have a big display of our jewelry in cases and the customers
just loved the wonderful bakelite colors.

Question: What is it about working
with vintage bakelite that appeals to you?

Ron: I like working with
Bakelite because it is so unique. It can look so average
and be turned into something so beautiful, charming and whimsical. It can
bring joy and happiness to collectors
and I like that.

It holds a place of its own and only grows better with age. Sometimes I wish I had taken pictures of
everything we have made but I was always too busy making it and selling it to do
that.

Question: What part of the process do
each of you do?

Ester: We both work on the jewelry together.
I am the ace carver. I do the carving on the pins and the reverse carved
bracelets and I help Ron with the dotting.

He does the checks and the bulk of the finishing. He is the
sander and polisher. It is exacting and sometimes tedious work, but we enjoy it.

Question: What pieces you you
like best to work on? To wear?

Ester: We like doing the bracelets best. It is something we can do together,
and they are always popular. There are so may different things you can do to
a bracelet. When we think we have exhausted all our ideas another one pops up.

As for wearing our jewelry. I have one piece that I have kept
and love to wear. It is a Scotty dog that is sitting with his back to you and looking
over his shoulder. I have only done one of them and like him so much I kept him.

NOTE: Shultz bakelite jewelry is made from vintage 1930-40s
bakelite and Catalin, not a contemporary material. They use old bakelite
bangles, sheets, rods and dice to create their wonderful jewelry. Like all
vintage bakelite, some of the colors will mellow and deepen over time. It is a
lovely process and the exact same thing that happened to all bakelite over time.

BARBARA WOOD was a dealer on line and in Houston, Texas, for many years. She was
the best and most enthusiastic promoter of their work, and handled hundreds of
their pieces over the years. She has since retired, but you can see many of the
pieces she once had any of the books about Shultz Bakelite Jewelry and on my web
site.

Barb and I have been friends for many years, so when she retired
from the business several years ago, she sent all her remaining jewelry to us
here at Morning Glory Jewelry to sell for her. It’s been a really delightful
partnership!

STARET

STARET is a company about
whom little is known. Their jewelry was made in the early 1940’s and they may have been
located in Chicago. There have always been rumors that they were affiliated
with Eisenberg, but this seems doubtful, even though the styles and sizes are somewhat
similar. Their pieces are generally large and the settings are often pot
metal.

STARET jewelry is big, showy and fun to wear.
The best pieces combine enameling and rhinestones like many of the ones
shown below.

STARET butterfly pin… that old classic from the 1940’s! It is unsigned,
but I have had these in several color combinations, both signed and
unsigned, before. It is 3 inches across with marvelous purple and clear

Dating Rings, Victorian to 1930s

Late 1700s to
1840s
It is always fun when a ring is inscribed with a
date, taking the guess work out of circa dating. Although jewelry is
sometimes seen with a much later inscription than when it was actually
made, that is not the norm.
Rings from the early 1800s that are not dated may also have features to help identify them. Stones
in that period were often set in a close-backed mounting, and sometimes
foiled as well. Stones in the rings could also be set in a silver head
with a karat gold band and rose cut diamonds, all typical of this time
period. Hair and memorial rings were worn by both men and women.

GEORGIAN Stuart crystal
ring with gold wire cipher on the inside, size 9-1/2, stone is 1/2" by 1/2".
The crystal is a faceted octagon with a tiny layer of hair under the bottom
and a dash of rose pink coloring.

GEORGIAN 12 karat yellow gold
double serpent ring
with rose cut diamond center in a closed back setting, circa 1810-1830, size 9-1/2,
weight 4.664 grams. The diamond is set in a pinched silver collet rim and the scale
design wraps around the entire ring. The diamond is 3.3 to 3.6 mm,
difficult to measure in this setting. The color is a foil backed light
brown and it has a tiny broken edge visible only under magnification. View

foil backed rose cut diamonds by-pass ring with two rose cut diamonds, one 4.2 x
4.8 mm, one 4.1 x 4.9 mm, and six 2.1 to 2.4 mm diamonds; clarity S1 to I-1, color foil
backed with slight tint, total weight 2.241 grams. This ring is a size 9, and is
7/16" along the finger at the front and the band is 1/8" wide at the back. Circa 1800-1820, the the two larger diamonds are set in pinched collet rims. View

VICTORIAN high domed rock crystal cabochon ring with reverse carved and
painted robin bird on a branch with oak leaves. The setting also has has three
leaves in gold on each side of the center cabochon. The ring is a size 9 and
3/4" along the finger, the cabochon is a very deep 1/3" with some scratching
visible under magnification, some paint missing inside as can be seen in the
photos. The band, which may be later-added, is hallmarked for 9ct gold, "375",
maker "T&S", "9 375 R" in a hexagon mark, cabochon tests as rock crystal, band
tests 10k, cabochon setting tests 14k. NOTE: That is my windows reflected in the
left side of the dome. This is reflective and seems to almost glow from inside the

hair underneath crystal, initials "AC" made of tiny pearls and woven hair
under the crystal front, which is surrounded by seed pearls, and engraved on

front. It comes in a box from the well-known shop "Cameo Corner Ltd., 26
Museum Street, London WCI.

VICTORIAN 10-14k Tassie cameo portrait
of "Mad" King George II, (1738-1820), size 5 and 3/4" by 5/8" along the finger.
This material for making cameos was invented by James Tassie late 18th
century. The blue coloring at 3 o’clock on the ring is probably a manufacturing
error at the time it was made since the blue color is also under the top layer of
the white cameo, seen from the side. The total weight is about .26 ounces. Hallmarks on the band are crown 375 tiger face and cursive "D"
maker’s mark "B G", band tests 10k, front tests 14k, so I am thinking it is
possible that he band may not be original to the ring. There are no other signs
that it was ever anything else, though. View

seed pearl and hair mourning ring inscribed "En. Thornton obt 8 Nov 1802 at 54".
That makes it over 200 years old! The size is 8-3/4 and it is 1/2" along the
finger at the front. Total weight about .13 ounces. There are scratches on the
crystal, visible under magnification, but the braided hair can be easily seen
through it. What a treasure from another age.

Circa 1860 to
1890
Jewelry catalogues came into vogue along with the
mass production of jewelry. Looking at the illustrations and written
descriptions is a definitive way to date pieces. Hair jewelry was still
popular and could be fashioned as a home craft or ordered from
catalogues. Taille
d’epargne enamel work became very popular, as did mosaic and Mizpah rings.
Jewelry of this era can be a bit heavier and more somber that later
jewelry.

Cameo and
Intaglio Rings
Dating cameo rings can be facilitated by both the
setting and the carving of the pieces. Classic faces, harking back to
Greek and Roman mythology, characterize many rings of this period.
Comparing the settings with other Victorian rings also helps determine
age.

Modern Rings in
Vintage Styles
Both the rings below are 1960-1990 settings, and
both have older centerpieces. The Japanese "kashira" and the Old
European cut diamond date to the 1800s. With the popularity of vintage
styles, many new rings are available with the older stones and
settings…. filigrees, older diamond cuts and even all-out
reproductions. Here is where the privilege of handling many older pieces
many be the best way to determine dates as some of the copies are very
convincing. There is of course nothing wrong with buying vintage style
rings… the diamond below belonged to my grandmother and I wanted it
set with a period flair… but it is good to know which is genuinely old
and which modern.

JAPANESE 10k yellow gold shank
and base ring with Japanese Samuri sword kashira with gilt carved dragon
motif, ring size 7-1/2. The kashira which is probably comprised of copper and a
small amount of gold, measures 1-1/3" by 2/3"wide.

By custom, wedding rings are worn on the
third finger of the left hand. In the 1856 book "Inquire
Within for Anything You Want to Know" by G.G. Evans, two explanations
are given for this custom. One goes back to Roman times, when a ring was
worn on the fourth finger of the left hand because it was believed that
a nerve ran from there to the heart. In Christian custom, the third
finger symbolizes the Trinity.

VICTORIAN MINIATURE PORTRAITS

Hand painted miniature portraits were the
predecessors of photography. In an age when no other means of preserving
a likeness was available, a hand painted portrait was a treasure and a
legacy passed from generation to generation. Painting surfaces for these
miniature works of art varied from porcelain and celluloid to ivory.
Some portrait
miniatures were done of famous "beauties" of the era, others were of
classic style beauties rather than a particular real person.

Sterling Jewelry

McCLELLAND BARCLAY was both an illustrator and a designer. Born in 1891,
he painted and made sculptural utilitarian pieces and decorative objects
for the home, as well as jewelry. His design sense was magnificent. While
they are not his best known work, I prefer his sterling jewelry pieces
which often have an Arts & Crafts flavor. Sadly, he died in World War II in 1943.
Most of his sterling jewelry was made in 1942 and 1943.

Rice-Weiner & Company, Rhode Island, made the McClelland Barclay
Jewelry. They were also the makers of other well-known lines such as the Alex Korda "Thief of Bagdad"
series and the jewelry marked only "Barclay".

1800s to mid- 1900s

VICTORIAN LOCKETS
1837-1900

A larger size and wide
collars are typical of lockets from the Victorian era. The best of the
Victorian lockets have matching collars and lockets with photo fittings inside,
wide decorated collars with the "Y piece in place, and perhaps
hallmarks. With the "Y", they can be worn at a shorter or longer length,
a flexibility that many collectors enjoy. These were all made in around
the 1860-80s, and the motifs and styles were amazingly varied.

designs and lovely lady motifs. Lockets are a bit smaller now and are
worn on a chain rather than a wide collar. Simple heart and oval shapes
are also popular, with the elongated oval shape being very collectible
now.

1940-50s LOCKETS

The 50’s had a wide variety of designs in lockets as well
as in the metals and colors that were used. My personal favorites of
this time period are the Hobe lockets with wonderful rhinestones
and semi-precious gems set in hand made wire work.

unsigned sterling locket with gold wash, pink, blue and clear
unfoiled rhinestones and dangles,
locket front with lovely applied flower motif, 2-1/4". I cannot
decide whether or not I think Hobe did this piece, but it charming
and unusual nonetheless. The locket opens from the front so you
don’t have to take the brooch off to see a picture.
