WOOD JEWELRY

One way to survive hard times is with wit… a sense of
humor and an appreciation for the absurd. The 1930′ to the 1950’s, Depression
years followed by war years, brought about some of the wittiest and most
absurd jewelry of the 20th century, and some of the most fun to wear.
Wood jewelry was either assembled, as the wood beads mixed
with plastic, glass and other materials, or carved and painted, as the
figural pieces shown below. Fashioned by both jewelry companies and home crafters, the
designs seem endless and the creativity amazing.

This small feature describes the shortage of jewelry making materials during
World War II. Times were tough, but it resulted in some whimsical jewelry to
create cheer in an inexpensive way.

This

advertisement
from March 16, 1942, tells about the materials shortages
during WWII, and the resulting materials from which jewelry could have been
made of during that time. They call it "junk jewelry" but I think it is fun
and whimsical! Materials like tin, copper, aluminum, chrome, nickel, and
iridium were needed for the war efforts, so the jewelry makers were using
wood, raffia, felt, clay and glass.

It also mentions the extensive use of sterling in costume jewelry, and the fact
that rhinestones and glass from overseas, including CzechoSlovakia, were running
very low. Wood, felt, clay and straw were both available and fun..

It seems that as of the date of the ad,
sterling was still being used in jewelry, too, but it was costly.

Some of this whimsical jewelry can be seen on this page.
