VICTORIAN SILVER JEWELRY

Victorian jewelry is as complex in it’s symbolism, sentiment and
design as was the fashion, architecture and decor of the time. Worn as an
ornament, a love token or a remembrance, jewelry not only completed the
well-dressed lady’s costume but also denoted her position in society,
her marital status and her sense of self.

Since the Victorian era stretched over six decades, many types of jewelry
came and went in vogue. Mass production made jewelry available to the
widest number of buyers in the broadest range of designs ever seen
before in history. When it came to formal occasions, the "more is
better" theme of the Victorian era carried over into how jewelry was
worn by royalty and the aristocracy. Paintings of Queen Victoria and
other royals at state occasions show multiple brooches, swags, earrings,
bracelets and hair ornaments. But the jewelry of the everyday folk is
collectible, fascinating and a lesson in history that enchants us even
today.

VICTORIAN sterling Ye Spider and Ye Flie
(fly)
brooch with raised insects and a scalloped edge, 1-5/8" by 1" and heavy for
it’s size The maker’s mark on the back is "H&M", and the registration mark
is for the date November 16,1880. The design is a fly on a branch facing a
spider in his web with the saying engraved in the top left rectangle. This
saying came from a nursery rhyme written by Mary Howatt in 1828. The Prince
of Whales often gave Victoria gifts with this novelty theme, including a
bracelet. See Davidov
& Dawes book "Victorian Jewelry" page 45 for a "Ye Spider and Ye Flie"
brooch. This piece is also shown on page 25
of the book "Jewellery in the Age of Victoria".

chain, and the ring is a size 10 and 1/2" wide along the finger. The box is the
one in which it came to me, a vintage box that displays it nicely. I have
been told that this is called "Grandeln" in German:, or the canine teeth of a
deer. They are considered as hunting trophies and were (and still are) commonly
used in folkloristic jewelry in Bavaria, Austria etc. The acorn motive is
another key element of this type of jewelry.

Woodstock was a small town outside
Oxford, England, site of the most famous cut steel workshops circa 1761.
A jeweler during that time to have been selling cut steel jewelry a
price higher than gold. Steel jewellery became fashionable in France and
its enormous cost made it
popular to the nobility. Napoleon, on his second marriage to
Marie-Louise of Austria commissioned a whole parure of cut
steel for his new bride. By 1775, Mathew Boulton was the most famous steel worker Matthew Boulton,
first in London and then in Birmingham. By the 1790s the industry was
producing its finest work although the French Revolution robbed the
British workshops of their best customer. Though many shops in
England closed, the French cut steel industry survived to the turn of the
19th century.

Since cut steel will rust if it gets wet or damp,
and is difficult to polish or clean, much of it has been discarded and few good
pieces remain today. I would date the piece at left between
1775-1800 as the individual pieces are quite small. The smaller the pieces of
cut steel used in the jewelry the earlier the item was, while later pieces had larger cut
steel pieces

describing this necklace. See Dawes & Collings "Georgian Jewellery,
