VICTORIAN SILVER BRACELETS

Victorian jewelry is as complex in it’s symbolism, sentiment and
design as the fashion, architecture and decor of the time. Worn as an
ornament, a love token or a remembrance, jewelry not only completed the
well-dressed lady’s costume but also denoted her position in society,
her marital status and her sense of self.

Since the Victorian era stretched over six decades, many types of jewelry
came and went in vogue. Mass production made jewelry available to the
widest number of buyers in the broadest range of designs ever seen
before in history. When it came to formal occasions, the "more is
better" theme of the Victorian era carried over into how jewelry was
worn by royalty and the aristocracy. Paintings of Queen Victoria and
other royals at state occasions show multiple brooches, swags, earrings,
bracelets and hair ornaments. But the jewelry of the everyday folk is
collectible, fascinating and a lesson in history that remains enchanting even
today.

VICTORIAN sterling silver bangle with rose and yellow gold floral
overlay, 6-3/4" by 7/8". Circa 1880s, it is a lovely example of the applied
gold leaves and flowers, including a morning glory, as well as an arch over
them and etched designs on either side. This is in very good vintage
condition, with only one shallow dimple on the plain back side.

VICTORIAN
1890’s silver hinged bangle, ovals with alternating
Aesthetic birds and floral designs, 6-1/3" by 1-1/3". The front of this
bangle has five ovals, each with a different design of birds and
foliage. Inside the bangle are the hand etched initials "PM to LM". This has
two very shallow dimples on the back, mentioned only for accuracy as they do
not detract at al. The catch works perfectly and otherwise this is in
excellent condition with no scratches are wear. For an eye-popping variety
of these Victorian hinged bangles, see Davidov & Dawes "Victorian Jewelry"
page 24.

VICTORIAN silver hinged
bracelet with teeth as stones, acorn and oak leaf motif. I have been told
that this is called "Grandeln" in German: canine teeth of deer. They are
considered as hunting trophies and were (and still are) commonly used in
folkloristic jewelry in Bavaria, Austria etc. The acorn motive is another
key element of this type of jewelry
