STARS, symbol of light
in the darkness, hope, the highest point man can reach. Sparkling,
brilliant and mysterious… a perfect shape for jewelry. Moons and
crescent moons symbolized everything including the mystic, the romantic
and the feminine. And comets flash through the sky as well as ride on a
VICTORIAN 15 carat yellow gold
eye-shaped high domed brooch with cannetille work, aqua and white enameling, nine rose cut
diamonds and four pearls as accents set in a star, delicate wire and bead work in the
gold, circa 1870. The brooch is 1-5/8" by 2" and 3/4" deep. There is

tiny photo or lock of hair as well as a safety chain. The brooch has
substantial weight and is of excellent quality and condition.
added bonus, this lovely brooch is presented in it’s original fitted
turtle-shaped burgundy velvet lined box marked "Widdowson & Veale
Goldsmiths & Jewellers, The Court of Spain 73 Strand, London" (partly
illegible). They were at the Strand address from about
1830-1850. Widdowson & Veale was a well-known jewelry company who
also did sterling serving pieces, novelties, weapons and flatware. A pendant
like this can be seen in Benjamin’s "Antique Jewellery" on page 65. He calls
this color "Cambridge blue".

GEORGIAN Halley’s comet
brooch, rose cut diamonds set in 15 karat gold, in vintage box, 1-1/8". Each time
it was to be seen in the heavens, a surge of comet jewelry became
popular again, worn to commemorate the excitement of it’s sighting. It
was seen, among other years, on November 16, 1835 and this pin dates to
that sighting. Mark Twain was born shortly thereafter, and
coincidentally passed away at it’s next sighting in 1910. It is one of
the most beautifully made comet pins I have ever seen, a tiny treasure
to illustrate a glowing event.

GEORGIAN English oval brooch with diamonds and pearls set in a starburst on royal
blue Guilloche enamel surrounded by a band of white enamel, presented in
it’s own fitted box. The back of this pin looks like rose gold and the front yellow
gold, and sometime in the past, the front was soldered to the back. There are natural pearls and both mine and rose cut diamonds,
total weight about .2 carats. The center diamond is about a .06 ct mine cut
diamond. In the lid of the box it says, "Watherston 42 Old Bond Street
W" (London, England), and while this box fits this brooch exactly and seems to have been made
for it, you can never tell positively if they originally came together.
