DEROSA JEWELRY
1934 to mid-1950s New York City

Let me begin by confessing that I am a big fan of DeRosa jewelry. It’s been one of my top favorites for almost 30 years, so
let me know if you have any for sale. I will always pay really fair
prices for pieces that I like.

Ralph DeRosa jewelry is known for its intricate and layered designs,
high quality, unusual stones and translucent enameling. Some of their
jewelry lines were designed by Elvira but I do not know who designed the
rest. Mr. DeRosa’s wife was Virginia De Rosa and she and their
two daughters, Teresa and Vera (Elvira), also participated in the company.
According the Deanna Cera’s book "Amazing Gems" on page 142, Fred Block
Inc may have manufactured some jewelry for DeRosa, too, but not everyone
agrees with that statement. Cera dates it from
1935-1955. DeRosa
jewelry designs include floral, figural, and retro motifs, as well as designs inspired by
some of the precious jewelry of past eras.

DeRosa jewelry is not easy to find because not many of each design were
made, but is certainly more than worth the search. After years of
collecting and selling this wonderful brand, I have found that the
majority of their pieces were signed, so beware unsigned attributions
unless there is reference material to substantiate it. This firm was
at 404 Fourth Street in New York City and created jewelry from the
mid-1930s until the mid-1950s.

As a serious collector, one of the best things about this company is
that not many of each piece was made. Many of the pieces shown below are the
only ones I have seen of their kind in all the years I’ve been handling
vintage jewelry. One exception is the cupid riding on a pearlized cloud
brooch, which I see very often. An example of it is shown here on this
page. To me, that and their brooches using tumbled uncut stones are much less interesting than the other DeRosa
pieces, and my guess is that they were made later.

Hand painted illustrations from the De Rosa Jewelry Company
seem to have been the first step in the design process. These miniature
works of art are from a collection of over 250 similar illustrations
that I am happy to own and use as a reference. Several are dated in the
1940’s, and many have hand written notes about how each piece should be
produced. Many jewelry designers never
worked on paper first, but for those who did, these illustrations are
illuminating as to the thought process and
design sense that went into creating this amazing jewelry.

DEROSA
bird fur clip shown here at the right. #d20435

DEROSA
bird fur clip with outstretched wings paved with blue glass cabochons along with clear
rhinestone accents on the chest, wing edges and on a beautifully designed swirling tail.
Made in the 1940s, it is all set in gold plated silver,
and it is 4" across. This is not signed but I attribute it to DeRosa based on
their original design art work shown here. Not many DeRosa pieces were
unsigned, but I do find them now and again.

DEROSA
original design art work shows a fly fur clip that seems to detach from the
larger leaf brooch. It looks like the fly #d37735, shown here at the right, but
so far I haven’t seen the leaf brooch to go with it. I sure wish I could
find one!

in the 1940s, it is in very good vintage condition with only some cloudy
rhinestones. This is really unusual and the interesting movement in the swirling design shows one reason
that I have always enjoyed collecting DeRosa. Interesting that it was made
almost exactly like the design painting with no changes.

FISH
COPY brooch in gold tone metal with a green rhinestone eye, unsigned,
2-1/3" by 2-1/8". I was surprised when I saw this by how
much it is like the DeRosa fish clip, although it is a bit smaller and the
metal more thin. The DeRosa is two-sided and hollow in the middle,
but this one is curved and all one piece of metal. This is also
textured on the back. I wonder if it was meant to fool the public
into thinking it was by DeRosa, it seems too similar to have been done
by accident. If you know either who made it or when it was made, I
would sure like to know.

wonderful bracelet shown

DEROSA
spectacular hinged bracelet with a long rectangular red
rhinestone center and two rows of clear rhinestones leading to a row of blue
baguettes on each side. It is in a gold plated setting, it is signed "DeRosa" on the back
of the clasp and it still has it’s safety chain. It is in very good vintage
condition, with only light scratches and rubbing of the finish here and
there. It is 6-2/3" around the inside, 1" wide at the front and 5/8" wide at
the back. Beautiful
and very hard to find, it’s the only one I have seen like it so far in the
three decades I have been collecting DeRosa! And how great to have the
original design art work for it, too. Maybe one day will find
the brooch that matches.

made in fewer numbers than most other well-known makers, making it more

fur clip with a gorgeous purple oval rhinestone center, pale yellow baguette

2-5/8" by 2-1/8". Some of the tiny clear rhinestones have grayed a bit with
age, which can happen, but it’s still an absolute beauty. The last photo
shows what may be the original design art work for this piece, and while the
art’s not for sale, it did come from a collection of original DeRosa design
art work which I am lucky enough to own. The layered three-dimensional look
is so typical of DeRosa, and one of the reasons they are a top favorite
maker of mine in both quality and design.

DEROSA
rare fur clip with gold tone chain fringes and

3-1/2" long. It was made in the 1940s, and shimmers beautifully when it moves. While
this is not signed, I know it is by DeRosa because I have one in this same design with the DeRosa
signature on the back. This is in very good vintage condition on the front,
and the fur clip mechanism on the back has a professionally added a safety
catch for security. Like so many pieces by DeRosa, it is beautifully
designed and unusual. A real joy to own and to wear, and the dangling
chains create a beautiful movement.
