PEACOCK EYE JEWELRY

~
PEACOCK EYE JEWELRY
~
There are at least two kinds of what is called
"peacock eyes" in jewelry, one a blue and green foiled glass bead or cabochon, and the other a
raised blue poured glass center surrounded by a lovely green enamel. Made in around
1900-1920, the glass portion of this jewelry was probably from Gablonz,
Bohemia (Czechslovakia), but it could have been set in other places as well. They
were imported into England and Germany, and perhaps other countries, to make
Arts & Crafts and other jewelry.

PEACOCK EYE antique pendant necklace
in gold colored metal, the wearable length of the necklace is 16" wearable
length, and the drop below the round ring is 4" long including the tassel.
There is a line across half of the spinner eye that may be original or may
be a crack, but it is very stable. The eyes are foiled blue and green
glass, probably from Gablonz, Czechslovakia, and the necklace made in about
1900-1910.

PEACOCK EYE
Arts & Crafts parure set in textured silver with colorful
glass peacock eye cabochons and dangly earrings with clip backs. It is not
often you find an entire matching group like this one. Peacock eyes are made
of crystal or glass over a silver foil, and according to Ginger Moro, some
were made in Gablonz, Bohemia (Germany). The necklace is 17-1/2" and each
leaf is 1-3/4"; the bracelet is 7" by 1"; the smaller earrings are 1" long,
and the dangling clip back earrings 2-5/8" top to bottom. It has the older
tube style closure on the necklace and it is all in excellent condition
except for one small chip in the side of a stone on the smaller earrings,
visible only under close examination. I
am not an expert on this style, but I think it is from the Amsterdam
School of design, or Dutch Art Deco, and from the 1930s.

PEACOCK EYE
large antique silver metal buckle with an etched design on the front. The
eye stands above the mounting and is absolutely lovely with rich colors.
The blue part is glass and the green is enamel. The buckle is curved and it is 4" by 2" in the
main body, not including the tendrils on one side. The eye is probably from Gablonz, Czechslovakia,
and the buckle was made in about 1900-1910. There is a very
interesting book called "Antique Enameled Jewelry" by Dale Reeves Nichols
and it shows a similar buckle on page 57, and there the buckle is identified
as one made by noted French Art Nouveau jeweler Piels Freres. This one
is not quite the same though, so I do not make that attribution.
