WARNING ABOUT NEW & FAKE

"BAKELITE" JEWELRY

NEW FAKE "BAKELITE" CARVED
BANGLES
Shown below are contemporary bangles made and carved
(or poured) in Asia from a formula that we understand is similar to
vintage bakelite, but NOT bakelite. These chunky bangles are fun to mix
with older bakelite, but it is good to know the difference so you don’t
pay vintage prices for newer bangles. So be aware though that these are
CONTEMPORARY (from the late 1990’s on), they should not command the same
prices as vintage pieces, nor should they be represented as from the
1940’s. I first saw them circa 2003. They are nicely "carved"
( really molded) and a bit
heavier and larger in scale than most vintage bakelite, and they often
measure 2-5/8" instead of the usual 2-1/2" across the inside. Many more
styles are made than are shown on this page and many "fakelite" bangles and brooches are still being made
today, some coming from other countries. Some are very difficult to tell from the real thing, and some are
being made now to fool the public, so buy from someone who knows what
they are selling. I hear that some even test positive using
Simi-chrome!

So like all vintage jewelry, please buy from a known and trustworthy
dealer who has a good knowledge of what they are selling. And don’t
confuse "fakelite" with the nice artisan bakelite jewelry that is being
made by artists today. Most of it is signed by the maker, and there are
some amazing pieces being done.

"FAKELITE" Brooches
Shown below are contemporary brooches meant to
fool those who are not bakelite experts. They are not made from the
original vintage bakelite recipes at all. While fun to wear, here again you
shouldn’t have to pay vintage bakelite prices for pieces like this. Now
there are many more brooches being made to fool the public, so be
careful what you buy!

While this is a fun piece to wear, it should not be priced as old bakelite. Note
the shavings still present where the drilling was done.

Also, the molding line along the side of the finger can be easily seen.
