ANTIQUE early Victorian cut steel sewing chatelaine with 7 implements

Price: $1,298.00
Description ANTIQUE early Victorian cut steel sewing chatelaine with 7 implements, 16" total length.  The top hook portion, which is 2-1/2" by 2-1/3", is cut steel and is in excellent shiny condition with a wheat, heart and scrolls design.  The implements include an antique key; a very special scissors with a fitted case, including a small pocket with a tiny slot in it for a paper of needles labeled "Prinzess Victorian Best Silver Eyed Blunts" that still holds about 10 needles, and the case doubles as a needle holder, too, with needles all the way around the outside; a tiny corkscrew and crochet hook; an aide memoir; a sewing awl and round coin purse that opens on a hinge.

This is in as nearly perfect condition as I have ever seen for it's type and age, early Victorian.

For years, ladies wore necessary and useful implements clasped to the waist of their dresses on chatelaines like this one because clothing was not made with pockets for carrying such items.

They were usually worn suspended from a clip or large brooch with chains and hooks to hold the various implements, although later chatelaines could be worn suspended on a finger ring, like a dance chatelaine for instance.

Fashioned of both precious and non-precious metals, they could be extremely simple or ornamented with embossed work, pierced work and gem stones.

They were fashioned in a wide variety of materials: gold, sterling, gold washed, cut steel and enameled and jeweled.

A similar cut steel chatelaine can be seen in the book "Jewels & Jewelry" by Clare Phillips on page 65 and in "Chatelaine" by Cummin and Taunton, page 198-9.
