FEATURE: Miriam Haskell designed by Frank Hess ~ Seashells

Some of the best and most collectible Miriam Haskell jewelry was made in the first decades, when Frank Hess was her head designer. Frank Hess was the head designer from about 1926 to 1960 and his talent was unrivaled. In the early days, Haskell put no identifying marks on their jewelry at all. As a mater of fact it was not marked until about 1947. Today the early unsigned pieces can be identified from vintage art work and advertisements, and by their wonderful detail, hand work and designs. Read more about Haskell Hess jewelry in our article in JEWEL CHAT. There are also two wonderful books about this jewelry that can be purchased on Amazon.

There were material shortages that affected the costume jewelry business during World War II, and one of the substitute materials used during that time was natural elements like seashells. Sewn onto fabric bands, incorporated on brooches, and twined around coil bracelets, they made whimsical jewelry. The variety was amazing and the look has the creativity of Hesss pieces.

FEATURE: MIRIAM HASKELL ~ Glass Leaves & Intricate Beadwork

MIRIAM HASKELL... the name alone conjures up images of tiny faux pearls and colorful beads, strands of rose montees and glass leaves all fashioned into tapestries of dazzling jewelry. During the early days of her jewelry making in the 1930s and 1940s, most pieces were not signed. Now the hunt for them is inspired by the wonderful sense of design, the intricate craftsmanship and the mystery of what IS and what is NOT Haskell. Our Haskell jewelry is guaranteed to be the real thing, and vintage 1930-60s rather than contemporary as well

The list of wonderful designers who worked for her over the years includes Frank Hess, Bob Clark, Larry Vrba and Millie Petronzio and others. Although she passed away years ago, the joy collectors get from her jewelry still lives on.

One of my personal favorites are the Frank Hess sets that include big glass leaves, petals and flowers. They were all assembled by hand in American during that time. Delicate yes, but great fun to wear and always attracting attention wherever you go. They are particularly nice to collect along with the Larry Austin advertising art work that illustrated them in shops and boutiques where the jewelry was sold.

MIRIAM HASKELL ~ WWII era wooden beads and leaves

Wood was another alternate material used during the 1940s WWII years. Natural or dyed, in small seed bead sizes and larger bells, and sometimes combined with other materials as well, these are great fun. Wood elements came in heart and star shapes, and larger pieces were carved to made flowers and leaves. Creatively fashioned into acorns, combined with everything from coral to colorful glass buttons to sea shells, these are cheerful and a joy to wear and display.
