FEATURE: HEARTS

VALENTINES DAY is around the corner and such a perfect time to do something truly special and unique for your loved ones. And it could include a sentimental locket for a daughter to treasure, a heart bracelet for a sister, and more. And then there is always YOU!

The shape of the HEART denotes the center of both the spiritual and physical being, and in early days was thought to be the seat of mental abilities as well. In the western world it symbolizes love, charity, and passion. It is drawn in a stylized version, not the actual shape of the human heart, and is often colored red. Associated with Valentines Day, it is a gift of love in the form of jewelry.

Heart motif jewelry is a classic, found in almost every jewelry catalogue no matter what the date. The material from which it is made may change with fashions of the era, but the motif itself remains the same as you can see in these examples.

FEATURE: FIGURAL JEWELRY, people

Jewelry is brilliant, beautiful, and can be expressive of your own personality in a unique way. It can also express the era in which it was made. But one jewelry type has lasted for decades and decades is figural jewelry. People, animals, and other natural things can all be the subjects for this style.

But one of the most fun motifs is people and peoples things. A Hobe queenly brooch, a Swarovski face with headdress, or a juggling clown all make wonderful subjects.

FEATURE: FIGURAL JEWELRY, animals

When I think of figural jewelry, I think first of the WWII era wood and bakelite brooches. During difficult times like the war and economic stress a touch of whimsy can be fun, and what better than a pet kitty, a friendly dog or a swimming fish! Made using every imaginable material, these can be found in rhinestones, silver, bakelite, wood and Lucite.
