The BUCKLE is a symbol of self-defense, strength and protection. It is sometimes associated with the GARTER, symbol of binding loyalty and brotherhood. One of Englands orders of chivalry is the Order of the Garter which was founded in the mid-1300s by King Edward III.

To the Victorians, who loved symbols and secret languages, the buckle stood for steadfast love and loyalty. But in addition to the meanings it had, it was a wonderful motif for jewelry of all kinds. Silver lockets and hinged bangles are among the most often seen, but rings and brooches can be found as well.

Hobe et Cie was founded in Paris in 1887 by Jacques Hobe. His concept was to use fine jewelry techniques and non-precious materials to create jewelry for the middle class as well as for the wealthy. Brought to America in 1915 by his son William, Hobe jewelry was popular not only with everyday customers, but also with the Hollywood stars and such luminaries as Flo Ziegfield. Inspired by period jewelry of the past, earlier Hobe jewelry also had an historic flavor.

The name HOBE is synonymous with quality, especially in their earlier pieces. Although they made buckles and accessories in the late 1800s, then moved into costume jewelry fairly quickly. Their costume jewelry pieces from the 1930s to 1950s are my personal favorites. The hand made wire-worked designs and fabulous stones create a unique old-world style. When they combine objects into their jewelry, they take creativity to a new high. The purse frames, done in conjunction with Josef, maker of fine purses, are true works of art.

Unlike many other popular makers, good older Hobe jewelry is getting more and more difficult to find. These wonderful pieces have pride of place in my personal collection, and I love to share my delight in them with other collectors as well.
