| FIGURAL JEWELRY FEATURE: BIRD Jewelry
| Figurals are always popular in jewelry, whether it is your own breed of dog, your favorite songbird or a frisky fish. In the Victorian era these reflected the general interest in natural sciences, as well as sometimes having a sentimental or historic symbolism. The dove who brought the first green leaf to Noahs Ark and the swallow winging the soul to heaven are two Victorian examples of this. But birds neednt be anything but a lovely or whimsical theme for jewelry, as shown here. And oddly enough, Victorians used real stuffed birds on hats and set in gold for jewelry. Birds also symbolized the coming of Spring (Robins and blue birds), the feeling of joy (canaries), regal nobility (the cardinal), patriotism (the eagle) and peace and serenity (the dove).

| According to dog lovers, life is just not the same without a dog! We have had dogs all our lives, too, until lately, and now my dogs are the kind that dont poop in the back yard... dogs shown in jewelry! Scotties, Dauschunds, Spaniels and just mutts... they are all charming. Dog motif jewelry was a bit more rare in the Victorian era than it was in the 20th century, and mush less whimsical. By the era of bakelite and then wood jewelry, there was a wide variety of breeds, expressions and materials for dog jewelry lovers. From the realistic to the cartoon-like, they are all fun to wear. If you would enjoy adding some dogs to your own collection, pieces for sale can been seen at Morning Glory Jewelry where we have they live happily till we adopt them to a good home.

| FISH JEWELRY
| Fish in jewelry are just for fun! We learned to fish as small children, fishing on the northern New Mexico streams. It was a sport we shared with our Dad, who was a real outdoorsman, and fishing brings up many fond memories. But the fish jewelry I collect now is enjoyed for purely whimsical reasons. I love brooches that include colorful enamel work and also the bakelite fish. And a small smile is always a nice expression to cheer up an outfit. Who needs a grumpy fish?
