| FEATURE: HASKELL JEWELRY by Frank Hess
| In the early days of Miriam Haskell jewelry from about 1926 to the 1940s, Haskell put no identifying marks on their pieces. As a mater of fact it was not marked at all until about 1947. Today the early unsigned Frank Hess pieces are recognized from vintage art work and advertisements of that era, and by their wonderful detail, hand work and design. Hess was Miriam Haskells head designer for decades, and his designs are especially valued... perfectly formed, using interesting beads and lovely colors. An artist named LARRY AUSTIN illustrated many of these designs in his ADVERTISING ART WORK, treasures in themselves. Collecting both the art work and the pieces it illustrates is a real treat, and in my case, it took years to do. I was surprised as I went along to discover that Mr. Austins illustrations were very true to the original pieces. I am still on the hunt for more unusual Hess designs and am thrilled each time I find a new one. Frank Hess went on to other jewelry ventures in about 1960, but the legacy of unique talent he left behind delights collectors to this day. | FEATURE: VEGA MADDUX JEWELRY
| VEGA Maddox was a California jewelry maker in the 1960-90s. One of the great joys of running a web site is "meeting" wonderful people, including a very generous gentleman named Paul Golden. He emailed me to say: "I met Vega as a kid through my grandparents. She performed with my grandfather, Eddie Jackson, and Jimmy Durante. I enjoyed hearing her reminisce about the old days in show business with my grandparents. She was close to my father as well. "She was part of my Grandfathers act with Jimmy Durante. She would sit in the audience and sometime during the show Jimmy would come out on stage with a VERY small one piece outfit. Of course it was beaded and very red and very small, and he would ask for a volunteer to put it on and perform on stage with he and my grandfather. Vega would jump up and (you know in her hey day she was a large women) and run on stage to put on this tiny little outfit! It got a lot of laughs. She would then come out and perform with them using her "hips" and pushing both of them (Eddie and Jimmy) all over the stage as they danced and sang together." Paul shared many playbills and photographs of those days, and they as well as more Vega jewelry, can be seen HERE. What a treat to know a bit more about the dramatic generous colorful lady who made this wonderful jewelry! Vega Maddux jewelry for sale can be seen HERE.
