| FEATURE: VICTORIAN AESTHETIC JEWELRY
| Late Victorian Period circa 1880-1901
"Aesthetic" is a term sometimes used in conjunction with the jewelry of late Victorian era. This period was inspired by simple naturalistic asymmetrical themes.... birds, leaves and sometimes Japanese inspired elements like bamboo. It was a result both of the Japanese trade relations that had opened at mid-century and a corresponding trend toward a simpler more refined sense of design. Japonesque design motifs of this era include birds, bamboo, fans and scenes among other motifs.
Other favorite motifs of this late Victorian era include crescents and stars; curb link bracelets with padlock fasteners; and sash pins, buckles and chatelaines that emphasized the fashionably small waists. Jewelry with a sports motif also became popular as women became interested in being more physically active.

| It is a great hobby to enjoy finding sets of antique jewelry, and even more when they come in vintage boxes as well. At a time when Victorian jewelry is getting more and more difficult to find, sets are probably the most difficult of all. Whether made of hand carved jet settings with hand painted portraits, hand woven human hair memorial pieces, or engraved sterling, each has a history of its own.
Victorian often wore more pieces of jewelry at one time than we do when they dressed up, and some sets came with 6-8 different pieces. Included in one of these large sets might be a necklace that converts to a brooch; two bracelets; earrings that can be changed from a day to an evening look; and a tiara for the hair. In some sets the necklace had a wire form to convert it to a tiara. Â So much jewelry to enjoy and share! And the Victorians were a creative era who loved sharing their possessions and collections. Â One of our galleries of antique jewelry can be seen HERE where you can enjoy jewelry we have had in the past. | Dont Forget: JEWEL CHAT REFERENCES
