MESSAGE FROM JANE...

We all enjoy vintage jewelry, but have you considered collecting and using the vintage boxes in which some of it came? There are dainty Victorian cardboard ring boxes, usually lined with velvet that creates a slot for a ring inside. These are often printed with the name of a jewelry store on the top.

There are boxes with well-known makers names on them, too, from the 20th century. Examples are a Nettie Rosenstein box that holds a black satin jewelry carrier inside; a marvelous hat box-shaped carrier for Miriam Haskell jewelry; an original Eisenberg box signed inside the lid; a Dior gray hinged and fitted box, and a soft velvet Swarovski draw-string bag to protect rhinestone jewelry from scratching.

ORIGINAL ART WORK for JEWELRY

Another collectible is the design art work for costume jewelry. Many years ago I attended a New York auction where over 200 original pages of Ralph DeRosa design art work were for sale. Loving DeRosa jewelry as I do, I couldn't resist and I bought them all, allowing me to match many of the actual pieces of their jewelry with the art.

That lead me to watch for other similar art work, and we found some by Barclay, like a ladybug on leaves brooch that we owned long ago. Another type is the wonderful Larry Austin advertising illustrations for Miriam Haskell jewelry, often showing detailed furs and the elegant fashions of the 1940s. These were sent to the shops and boutiques that carried jewelry by Haskell and displayed on their walls.

Vintage advertisements also add to the reference pages on my site and you can see many at JewelChat, which is HERE.

Have a wonderful 2026 and we hope to be back with more jewelry information soon.
