VICTORIAN JEWELRY

Victorian jewelry is as complex in it's symbolism, sentiment and design as the fashion, architecture and decor of the time. Worn as an ornament, a love token or a remembrance, both the costume and fine jewelry of the era not only completed the well-dressed lady's attire but also denoted her position in society, her marital status and her sense of self.

Since the Victorian era stretched over six decades, many types of jewelry came and went in vogue. Mass production made jewelry available to the widest number of buyers in the broadest range of designs ever seen before in history. When it came to formal occasions, the "more is better" theme of the Victorian era carried over into how jewelry was worn by royalty and the aristocracy. Paintings of Queen Victoria and other royals at state occasions show multiple brooches, swags, earrings, bracelets and hair ornaments. But the jewelry of the everyday woman is collectible, fascinating and a lesson in history that enchants us even today.

VICTORIAN 15ct and garnet 2-1/2" brooch and 2" dangle earrings with original box, 5" by 3-1/3". The workmanship is amazing, with a different texture on the leaves and tiny balls of gold accenting each piece and festoon chains on the brooch. To find a set like this with it's original box is very rare. The earrings have had a stabilizing gold bar placed across the back years ago so they are very wearable. A wonderful boxed set. A festoon brooch similar to this can be seen in Benette & Mascetti's "Understanding Jewellery" on page 96.   View   View   View   View   View   View   View   #V32796

The middle element is a delicate fleur-de-lis design and the edge is a tiny wire twist design.    View   View   #V38225

VICTORIAN brooch with a scene of the Indian Taj Mahal delicately hand painted on a cream colored background, set in a gold tone setting with lovely black enamel work, 2" by 1-1/2". The detail is amazing and it looks like some of the lines were done with one hair, it is so fine. I suspect this would have been purchased as a souvenir of a Grand Tour trip so popular in that era.   View   View   #V38226

VICTORIAN rare 10-14k Tassie cameo portrait of "Mad" King George II (1738-1820), size 5 and 3/4" by 5/8" along the finger. This material for making cameos was invented by James Tassie in the late 18th century. The blue coloring at 3 o'clock on the ring is a manufacturing color change at the time it was made since the blue color is also under the top layer of the white cameo, seen from the side. The total weight is about .26 ounces. Hallmarks on the band are crown, 375, tiger face, and cursive "D" and a maker's mark "B G". The band tests 10k, front tests 14k, so I am thinking that the band is possibly not original to the ring. There are no other signs that it was ever anything else but a ring, so it is a bit of a puzzle.   View  View   View   View   View    #V37534

VICTORIAN Etruscan Revival 14k brooch and dangly earrings circa 1880, the Victorian Grand Period (1860-1885). All the pieces are articulated, and both the brooch and the earrings have an applied wire work, leaf and graduated balls motifs. The brooch is 2" long by 1-1/8" wide and the pierced earrings are 2" from the very top of the hoop to the bottom and 5/8" at the widest. The brooch is hinged in the middle and both tiny balls dangle as well. The earrings are hinged between the top ball the the earrings itself. There are no marks on this set but it tests 14 karat gold. I am showing a jpg of a similar set from a  SF Myers 1885 Catalogue below, just for reference. You can see the entire catalogue by clicking HERE.   View   View    View   #V37865

VICTORIAN NCR Company silver gilt bee motif set- a spectacular pendant, collar and earrings with a three-dimensional bee motif. The detail in this is so fine, better than pictures can show. On each piece, the detailed bee sits atop a puffy oval with lovely dangles beneath. The collar itself has the front of each link decorated with ferns and scrolls and a beaded edge. This unusual design ties into the Victorian interest in nature.

The maker's mark "NCR CO" is on the bolt loop. The collar is 15" by 5/8"wide; the pendant body is 1" by 1-1/3", total length 2-1/2 from top of loop to bottom of dangles; the brooch is 1-1/4" by 1-3/4" total; and the earrings are 2-1/2" total length by 3/4" wide.   View   View   View   View   View   View   View   #V34178

GEORGIAN Halley's comet brooch, rose cut diamonds set in 15 karat gold, in vintage box, 1-1/8". Each time it was to be seen in the heavens, a surge of comet jewelry became popular again, worn to commemorate the excitement of it's sighting. It was seen, among other years, on November 16, 1835 and this pin dates to that sighting. Mark Twain was born shortly thereafter, and coincidentally passed away at it's next sighting in 1910. It is one of the most beautifully made comet pins I have ever seen, a tiny treasure to illustrate a glowing event.   View   View   #V34393

VICTORIAN Flora ivory cameo brooch with full lady's face, well mellowed over the past 120 years to this lovely creamy color, circa 1880, 2" by 1-1/2". The long curls are accented by the roses in her hair. It is a classic profile which is not marred by the striation of ivory grain that is visible at the right side of her face. The twist design frames her beautifully and is typical of this style. According to Rowan in "Nineteenth Century Cameos" page 122, the French were the makers of most ivory cameos and cherubs and this is probably from Dieppe, France, where most of the carving took place.   View   View   View   #V33546

Looks like lace made of pearls. There are 4 tiny pearls missing from the left side of the center leaf motif. This bracelet, like all these antique seed pearl pieces, is extremely delicate and could only be worn with great care, an elegant collector's piece. Seed pearl jewelry in this delicate style, sewn to a mother-of-pearl backing,  was popular in the early 1800s when women wore delicate Classically styled Grecian costumes. By the time of Prince Albert's death in 1860, crinolines became popular and both clothing and jewelry became heavier.

It is interesting that seed pearls were used in different ways as the decades progressed. In Victorian jewelry it was set in gold, onyx and jet, where the seed pearls were often used to represented tears. It was used again in Edwardian jewelry, often in the form of delicate crescent moons and stars, birds in flight and lavalieres.

VICTORIAN parure of coral beads set in 10 karat yellow gold with etched designs circa 1880. Each piece has beautifully fashioned gold leaves and berries that hold the stick coral. The bracelet is four strands of coral beads with a coral bead catch, 7" long and has a safety chain. The larger brooch has a three foxtails and a watch hook on the back, 1-1/2"; the smaller brooch is 3/4"; earrings are 14k screw backs which were probably replaced in the early 1900's and are 7/8"; the ring is size 7. These are a mix of karat gold and gold filled, with the clasps and brooch fronts being 10k, the ring shank 14k and the fittings and earrings backs gold filled. Sets with this many matching pieces are very scarce, and this is a real treasure. POWDER BLUE Jasperware Wedgwood style cameo brooch with a girl and her dog scene, paper tag on the back says "Land End Turner c. 1770 Ht. 3495" and pressed into the back the name Turner, with a gilt silver setting and Victorian style c-catch, 1-7/8" by 1-1/2". I do not know what the words on the tag mean. Under a 5x loupe (or lens like my camera has) you can see a minute crack across the dog's lower body and from the girl's head to the leash. These happened during the curing process and are only surface deep, not all the way through, so they have been there since this lovely brooch was made.  View   View  #V37342
