This is my maternal grandmother, Agnes
Jeanette King Negley. I knew her only from family stories... she was
born in Kentucky in 1891 and died in 1930 when my own Mother was only
eight years old. Her box of jewelry was passed
on to me and enchanted me completely and permanently with jewelry. Her
jewelry was from the early 1900's. Notice the wonderful
lavaliere she is wearing
in the photograph at left. (The term "lavaliere" was derived from
the Duchesse de La Vallière, the mistress of Louis XIV in the
1660s.)
Her cameo, lavalieres and seed pearl star brooch are shown below. As
a young girl, she received the tiny gold ring with a
gypsy set diamond (shown at right). It is engraved on the inside with her initials "AJK"
and I have worn it most of my life.
EDWARDIAN, named after King Edward VII, or Belle Epoque jewelry
dates from about 1901-1920. Highlighted by the use of platinum, diamonds
and pearls, knife-edged settings, lavalieres, garlands, bows, wreaths,
lacy filigrees, star and crescent motifs all typified the era.

ART NOUVEAU 14 karat
yellow gold polychrome enamel, pearl and diamond wreath
watch pin pendant circa 1900. The dog's tooth shaped freshwater pearl
is accented by three European diamonds (total weight approx. .03 carat
each). The catch is a safety style, with roll-over closure, and the bail
swivels to be hidden when not in use. There is slight enamel damage on
one side, invisible without a 10x loupe.

ART NOUVEAU
14 karat yellow gold satin finished Swiss open face pendant watch set
with a gypsy set old mine
cut diamond (est. .06 ct, SI, H-1) and dated 1904. The case is
embellished with raised design of cherubs and
flowers, suspended from a watch pin of enameled griffons and a crown
(see at right). The watch is 1" across. The watch case is
engraved on the inside from a father to his daughter and dated Christmas 1904.
The case is marked "Swiss, A.W., K14, 127911" and a squirrel hallmark.
There are no numbers or marks on the works.

EDWARDIAN moonstone
beads and 9 carat yellow gold necklace, glowing moonstone balls encased in
wire cages are from 1/4" to 3/16", and the 16" chain marked on the catch
"9ct". Like the pools of light, these are not drilled, but set in little
"cages". Associated with the goddess Diana, the The Romans are said to have
believed that these were solidified rays from the full moon, and they have
been used in jewelry for hundreds of years.
