WAR MATERIALS

Bakelite and wood jewelry was popular in part because it was relatively inexpensive. Jewelry was made of sterling or sterling vermeil because other metals were needed for the war effort. Lucite was unusual, attractive and new.

WAR SOUVENIRS

A related branch of jewelry includes the pieces that soldiers brought home from overseas... both hand made items and foreign jewelry. From hand etched coin bracelets to European cameos and Oriental jewelry, soldier's families treasure things brought back from "over there".

THREE GRACES cameo. The Greek goddesses Euphrosyne, Aglaia, and and Thalia, representative of gentleness and refinement. A cameo in an 18 karat setting, this belonged to my husband's grandmother, and was purchased in  Italy during WWII.   View   View      #Ualma

Grandmother Alma wearing her three graces cameo.   View

VICTORIAN sterling coins charm bracelet. The 1880's coins were etched and decorated by hand to create floral motifs and initials. Pieces like this are often called "sweetheart jewelry", the idea being that sailors did these on board their ships to bring back to their sweethearts.    CAMEO in 14 karat twist setting... she has an anchor motif at her shoulder and a star in her hair. My Grandfather bought it for Grandmother Agnes when he was stationed in Italy during WWI.     #Uagnes2

STERLING engraved cigarette case and cigarette holder. The case has inlaid enameled edelweiss and a medallion which I believe is St. Barbara, all contained in the original lavender velvet lined case. Engraving in German says something like, "Soldier's good luck to my best battery", and on the back, "True comradeship against the Italian Battery 7FK9, 1915" with many engraved autographs.     View    View   #P20910

CAMEO  A very special cameo. My Grandfather bought it for Grandmother Agnes when he was stationed in Italy during WWI.    #Uagnes1
