McCLELLAND BARCLAY by Rice-Weiner gold and silver tone wings brooch, a big 4-3/4" wide, circa 1941. This is pictured on pages 62 & 63 in Brunialti's  " A Tribute to America Jewelry" and in Brunialti's "American Costume Jewelry Art & Industry" on page 244. There was also an advertisement for it in Mademoiselle Magazine, September 1941, as a "McClelland Barclay" piece, and it was made in more than one size.   View   #X27637

My father EDWIN DALTON HALEY was a pilot in WWII, flying cargo over "the hump" (the Himalayan Mountains) between India and China.

 His mother, my grandmother Rachael Frances Atherton Haley, is shown with here wearing the sweetheart's wings that wives and mother's of pilots were given.

WAR MATERIALS

Bakelite and wood jewelry was popular in part because it was relatively inexpensive. Jewelry was made of sterling or sterling vermeil because other metals were needed for the war effort. Lucite was unusual, attractive and new.
