BIRD
JEWELRY
The Victorians saw the bird
as a symbol for many things, depending on what kind it was and how it
was depicted. Examples are Noah’s dove from the Bible, bringer of great
news, and also as a reincarnation of souls who have passed away; the Robin
who brings Spring each year; and the Eagle symbolizing strength and freedom.
It’s interesting to see how many variations of them have been fashioned
into jewelry.

VICTORIAN silver dove holding
a heart brooch with each feather delineated on both the front and back
sides. It does test sterling but has no marks. The bird alone is 1-1/8"
and the total length is 1-3/4". A similar piece can be seen in the book
""The Price Guide to Jewellery" by Michael Poynder on page 226 where it is
dated circa 1880.

GOLDSTEIN-POLAND bird brooch of sterling set with clear rhinestones,
a bird on the wing brooch which is engraved "May Scott" on the back, 3-1/4" by
2-5/8" and from the 1940’s. There is a photo showing this
brooch in the Costume Jewelry Museum in Rhode Island and it shows the
brooch and the molds it was made from, as well as the Goldstein-Poland
name.

FLAMINGO in a pond landscape brooch with colorful enamel work in pinks, greens
and brown colors all on a gold tone metal brooch, 3" by 2-1/2". The detail
is terrific with an Arts & Crafts feel and it includes the flamingo bird, brown
cattails, rippling water, lovely flowers and leaves. This was freshly enameled
in 2023 and the results are stunning!

birds that can be one brooch or used separately as two pins. The combination
of enamel and clear rhinestones
set in silver tone is from about 1940, and this is 3-1/4" by 2-1/3".
There is some missing enameling on the high spots, as can be seen in the photo,
so this is priced accordingly.

JAY STRONGWATER winged dragon brooch with a wonderful combination of
colorful rhinestones. The large center stone is a rainbow of rose, purple,
peach and blue, and the wings are rose and green rhinestones. The body has
light pink, medium pink and caramel rhinestones, and all are in an antiqued
gold tone setting. It is signed on the back "Jay Strongwater", is 3" by 2"
and was made in about 1998, which is when I bought it brand new.
Strongwater pieces always have his distinctive look, and this wonderful
fantasy animal is my all-time favorite!

PERKY blue bird and flowers brooch, a 2-3/4" pin
that weighs 1.58 ounces. There are two shades of blue on the bird, two
yellow flowers outlined in white, a black eye and beak and a brown
branch. It has a mid-century look but there are no marks
present to assist in dating it positively.
