VICTORIAN JEWELRY
Victorian jewelry is as complex in it's symbolism, sentiment and
design as the fashion, architecture and decor of the time. Worn as an
ornament, a love token or a remembrance, both the costume and fine jewelry
of the era not only completed the well-dressed lady's attire but also denoted her position in society,
her marital status and her sense of self.
Since the Victorian era stretched over six decades, many types of jewelry
came and went in vogue. Mass production made jewelry available to the
widest number of buyers in the broadest range of designs ever seen
before in history. When it came to formal occasions, the "more is
better" theme of the Victorian era carried over into how jewelry was
worn by royalty and the aristocracy. Paintings of Queen Victoria and
other royals at state occasions show multiple brooches, swags, earrings,
bracelets and hair ornaments. But the jewelry of the everyday woman is
collectible, fascinating and a lesson in history that enchants us even
today.

VICTORIAN 15ct and garnet 2-1/2" brooch and 2" dangle
earrings with original box, 5" by 3-1/3". The workmanship
is amazing, with a different texture on the leaves and tiny balls of
gold accenting each piece and festoon chains on the brooch. To find a set like this with it's original
box is very rare. The earrings have had a stabilizing gold bar placed
across the back years ago so they are very wearable. A wonderful boxed
set. A festoon brooch similar to
this can be seen in Benette & Mascetti's "Understanding Jewellery" on
page 96.

the roses in her hair. It is a classic profile which is not marred by the
striation of ivory grain that is visible at the right side of her face. The
twist design frames her beautifully and is typical of this style. According
to Rowan in "Nineteenth Century Cameos" page 122, the French were the
makers of most ivory cameos and cherubs and this is probably from

Seed pearl jewelry in this delicate style, sewn to a mother-of-pearl
backing, was popular in the early 1800s when women wore delicate
Classically styled Grecian costumes. By the time of Prince Albert's death in
1860, crinolines became popular and both clothing and jewelry became
heavier. |
It is interesting that seed pearls were used in different ways as the
decades progressed. In Victorian jewelry it was set in gold, onyx and jet,
where the seed pearls were often used to represented tears. It was used
again in Edwardian jewelry, often in the form of delicate crescent moons and
stars, birds in flight and lavalieres. |

The setting is textured rolled yellow gold, as though the snake wraps twice

it is also seen as a symbol of the Virgin and Christ Child because of it's
sweetness.

VICTORIAN 18 carat yellow gold early
1800s
ring with central Old European cut diamond, four pearls and black and
white enamel, size 7-3/4. You can just barely see where it was once
engraved as a memorial inside the band, but over the years it has almost
all rubbed away. The raised design goes all around the band in a
chain-like design meeting at the front with scrolls that hold the
central rectangular element. There is slight loss of some of the black
enameling visible only under magnification.

This ring and brooch were given to Eliza Gray by Alexander K(elly) McClure
(b.1828, d.1910), her husband in 1876. The jewelry is engraved on both
pieces, and there is an enclosed family note to that effect as well.
According to the
1860 census, they lived in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. McClure was a
politician and writer, and was a supporter of Abraham Lincoln in the
1860 Presidential election. He was a owned a newspaper and was a prolific
political writer. |
