FAMILY JEWELRY
a LEGACY of LOVE

This is my maternal grandmother,
Agnes Jeanette King Negley
. I knew her only from family stories…
she was born in Kentucky in 1891 and died in 1930 when my own Mother was
only eight years old. Her box of jewelry was passed on to me and
enchanted me completely and permanently with jewelry. Her jewelry was
from the early 1900’s. Notice the wonderful lavaliere she is wearing.

Her cameo, lavalieres and seed pearl star brooch are shown below.
As a young girl, she received the tiny gold ring with a gypsy set
diamond (shown at right). It is engraved on the inside with her
initials "AJK" and I have worn it most of my life.

EDWARDIAN lavaliere in 10k
yellow gold with diamond and seed pearls, circa 1910. Lavalieres like
this can be seen in the
1913 Baird North Catalogue. The
term "lavaliere" was derived from the Duchesse de La Vallière, the
mistress of Louis XIV in the 1660s. This lovely pendant belonged
to my stepfather’s mother, Dorothy.

Mom, wearing her bow brooch. This photo of her went with my Dad in World War
II, where he was a pilot who flew the Hump.

It is made on several layer of a rich deep blue fabric, as well as other
fabrics underneath to reinforce the heavy fabric and make all the ruffles
and drapes stay in place.

This is a genuine
TREASURE
to me. It is the hand made wedding dress of my GREAT GRANDMOTHER, EMMA DIXON
KING, Kentucky circa 1894. I believe she made it herself by hand, and the
perfect, delicate stitches are a marvel.

It is tiny in size with probably an 18-19" waist and about the same size over
the bottom ribs, and I imagine it was worn with a corset underneath. She
was a tiny woman, standing few inches less than 5′ tall and wearing a size
3 shoe.

Beautiful draped front with ripples of fabric over the hip.

Jacket front shown above with the hand covered buttons in matching colored
velvet. Look at the photo below showing layers of pleated fabric.

Lovely velvet covered buttons that run down the front of the jacket. For some
reason, this photo exaggerates the fading a lot more than it is in person. In person it is barely faded.

Hand written note saying who this dress belonged to, and there are indeed some
extra buttons inside.
