1887-1889 Catalogue

Established in 1855, this original E.V. Roddin catalogue from 1887-1889
includes, "Diamonds, Watches, Fine Jewelry & Silverware" as well as rolled
gold and silver jewelry. This company both manufactured and sold goods as
well as importing them. A note in the catalogue states, "The engravings in
this Catalogue are correct and accurate illustrations of the goods… [and]
having studied carefully to call everything by it’s proper name and avoid
all exaggerations, we can safely say that all articles in this book will
look even better than the illustrations." These are excerpts from
this wonderful 200 page catalogue.

items shown in the catalogue.

VICTORIAN sterling
coins charm bracelet. The 1880’s coins were etched and decorated by hand to
create floral motifs and initials. Pieces like this are often called
"sweetheart jewelry", the idea being that sailors did these on board their
ship to bring back to their sweethearts, though these coins can be seen in
some old catalogues as well. Circa 1880.

"The material in which the above goods are mounted cannot be called gold, but it
is a very fine composition metal, particularly adapted to the settings, and made
especially for the mounting of Bohemian garnets."

VICTORIAN Bohemian wine red rose
cut garnet necklace in gilt setting with three front dangles, later added safety
chain, 17-1/2" with 2-1/2" front drop. What a lush beauty. Necklaces
like this can be seen in the
1899 Benjamin Allen Company Catalogue. Bohemian garnet jewelry can
be seen on page 88 of Romero’s Warman’s Jewelry, Ed. 3.

Bohemian Garnet Brooch
On page 3 of the catalogue, "GARNETS- There are two species of garnets- the
Oriental and the Bohemian. The lustre and beauty of the Oriental Garnet
places it far above the other in commercial value; the tint most esteemed is
violet-red. It is composed of a double silicate of Lime and Alumina. They
are found in Pegu, in Asia, Brazil and Ceylon. The Bohemian Garnet is
composed of a double silicate of Alumina and Iron, and are found in great
abundance in Bohemia, Saxony and other parts of Germany."
