McCLELLAND
BARCLAY
Sterling Jewelry
McCLELLAND BARCLAY was both an illustrator and a designer. Born in 1891,
he painted and made sculptural utilitarian pieces and decorative objects
for the home, as well as jewelry. His design sense was magnificent. While
they are not his best known work, I prefer his sterling jewelry pieces
which often have an Arts & Crafts flavor. Sadly, he died in World War II in 1943.
Most of his sterling jewelry was made in 1942 and 1943.
Rice-Weiner & Company, Rhode Island, made the McClelland Barclay
Jewelry. They were also the makers of other well-known lines such as the Alex Korda "Thief of Bagdad"
series and the jewelry marked only "Barclay".

He also made decorative objects for the home, such as
this ivy leaf calendar
which sits on my desk. |
McClelland Barclay also an illustrator and did advertising art work
such as this lovely lady. Note that she wears a silk embroidered piano
scarf wrapped around her body!
